I don't think I've ever looked forward to year as much before. No matter how you look at it, there's a ton of amazing stuff being released in the next twelve months. Now here's your chance to let everyone know what titles are going to be ones to look for in the new year.

Monster-At this point, you can't make a list of the big titles of 2006 without this. After over a year's worth of delays, it seems that we'll finally be getting this brilliant thriller in February. If you haven't read this, I can't recommend it enough.

Japan-Ponent Mon listed this as a December release, but I can't find it anywhere (they're notorious for delays), so I'm going to assume that it's a 2006 title. A collection of short stories about various places in Japan, half written by European artists, half by Japanese artists. I won't comment about the French cartoonists (though several are good), but the Japanese lineup is stellar. I'll buy anything with Taiyo Matsumoto in it, but it also includes Moyoko Anno, Kan Takahama, Jiro Taniguchi and Daisuke Igarashi (this guy's a genius). If your a fan of mature manga that doesn't follow conventions, this is sure to be up your alley. I'll post if I can find any kind of release date.

Dragon's Head-Tokyopop lists this as coming out next week or so, but I got my hands on the first volume in late December, and can attest that it's quite good. Like Battle Royale with better writing and less conventions.

Ohikkoshi-An early favorite of mine, this is a brilliant comedy/romance/drama from the creator of Blade of the Immortal. Yeah, not what you were expecting from Samura, was it? This one volume titles dives into the lives of college students as they try to find love and happiness. It's quite hilarious, and the characters are realistic and identifiable. Definitally a love comedy for the older reader.

Here's what I guess will happen in the New Year. Call it wishful thinking:

1. CMX suffering a severe PR problem.

I expect that CMX will somehow cause an uproar on another property they aquire, but on a much larger scale than the whole Tenjo Tenge mess. My guess is that how they treat this property will result in CMX either suffering alot of PR problems and thereby hurting their ability to aquire new properties, or causing DC Comics to drop the label entirely.

2. Dark Horse Comics adds more properties to their portfolio.

With DH reformatting their OMG! line to the industry standard, I expect that DH will add more properties to their line once OMG in the new format will take off. This might hold a possible avenue for releases of properties deemed too "hot" to handle (i.e. properties deemed too controversial due to content). Could DH release a Gantz Manga in 2006??

3. Viz will grow stronger with another major hit property.

With Naruto going well for Viz, Viz will have another major hit on their hands this year. Naruto's sucess will change the minds of Japanese property holders into capitalizing on any hot property quickly by not waiting on their laurels, but by reacting quickly to the market and cashing quickly.

4. 4Kids doing manga?

4kids has recently lost (most of) the Pokemon franchise to Nintendo, so what will the vaccum bring?? I predict that 4Kids might tap into the manga market by releasing manga similar to TOKYOPOP's Cine-Manga and Viz's Ani-Manga lines. A Winx Club cartoon-manga?? Maybe.

5. TOKYOPOP shifts more focus on American-Based manga.

I expect TOKYOPOP will focus more on American manga and release more into the market. I won't venture a guess if it will flop or not, but seeing that some recent new releases have not originated in Japan or Korea, the trend seems likely that TOKYOPOP will possibly have to be renamed USAPOP. This focus may also cause another unexpected event (See #7).

6. ADV Films will relaunch their Manga line with a more focused vision.

In addition to the series that they sorta release, ADV will come back in 2006 with a more focused Manga line, probably related to their releases in Anime. The past will be learned, and ADV will look carefully at such actions.

7. Another Manga Publisher?

In 2006, an unknown publisher will enter the manga market, with several unexpected properties in tow. These properties have been desired by US fans for a long time, and this provides an opportunity to challenge the dominance of TOKYOPOP and VIZ.

8. Hentai Manga will grow in popularity; how it's introduced is unique.

Did you know that Hustler Magazine has licensed several Anime in their portfolio? To further expand on this, a Porn company will test the waters by licensing several Hentai comics and pushing them thru Porn shops. Studio Name recognition might help these Hentai Manga garner some sales, and you might see them fall onto store shelves like Borders in some form.

9. A Major shakeup will hit a Manga company.

While I seem upbeat, I think in 2006, one of the major Manga comapnies stateside will suffer a major blow in some way. Whether they loss a major license, or suffer an unexpected problem, I predict that one of the majors will suffer somehow.

10. Manga breaks into the mainstream....but for the wrong reason.

Manga makes the headlines.....but this will be more of a defensive stance than an embrace. Someone with the zealot zeal of Jack Thompson will attack manga due to her kids picking up Battle Royale or Negima! and freaking out on the nudity, and launching a crusade which gathers steam. She or He will garner much media coverage, while several Otaku will atatck them with vitrol and words. 2006 might close with a court battle and organizations pooping up dedicated to preserving the sancity of Manga for the future.

I think 2006 will prove interesting this year. I could be wrong and it completely tanks.

interesting predictions. some seem likely while others like 7 seem a little too good to happen
the manga im looking forward to this year are
monster: im looking forward to this becuase its amazing, and its amongst my top maga, although the biggest reason i want this is so that i can catch up on 20th century boys. i was able o finish monster online but never 20thCB, so i want that bad.
shonan junai gumi gto, was one of my first and favorite manga's. now i get to read about his biker days, something that always interested me in gto. and from what i have already read of SJG its great.
golgo 13 i saw this anime awhile ago and enjoyed it, so im looking forward to the manga
oldboy after having seen this movie. i need to read this manga. im glad it got picked up, but i never heard about a release date yet so im curious about that

Heh, very wishful. Still some ideas have merits.

1.After the backlash, DC isn't going to edit anything else. They're not that stupid. Already they're releasing uncut titles. And if they did make edits, I'm guessing they would be minor (along the line of I"s) and cause little protest.

4. Shocked Might be concievable if Viz didn't already have all prospective titles.

5.This one has already happened, and while I like the fact that they're really backing the OEL line, it would be nice if most of the titles didn't suck. Luckly there are a couple new comics coming up that are showing promise (Becky Cloonan's new book looks pretty cool, as well as a couple of other titles).

7. It would nice if a publisher came in the game that focused solely on mature/non-mainstream titles (like Ponent Mon if they knew how to market). More likely we'll see another Yaoi line since it's probobly easier to break into the specialized market than try to compete with the big guys.

9. Ok, mind telling us why you think this other than speculation? Cause right now most companies are playing it pretty smart.

#4 is highly unlikely. 4Kids is a licensing companies for Network TV. Unlike regular companies like Geneon and Media Blaster that license and produce these DVD, 4Kids don't really produce squat and I don't see them becoming publisher anytime soon.

#5 Most OEL titles don't sale as well as regular manga title. OEL, are like manhwa in which they're testing the market and see how it fare. Tokyopop's main focus is still on Japanese manga, it's just that all the big major properties are already pre-own by Viz or Del Ray. ICv2 reports
Quote:
While Tokyopop is the leader in the OEL category, it is a mistake to think that the publisher is becoming more and more reliant on OEL releases. An ICv2 survey of a crucial 3-month period in 2006 in which Tokyopop is releasing 24 new series finds that only four of them could be considered OEL, while 17 are Japanese in origin and 3 are Korean. Will other OEL series be able to match the success of Warcraft and Megatokyo? The answer may be clear by this time next year.

What I'm looking foward to in 2006 is Viz's Signature Line. The second series of Vagabond with volume 21, Golgo 13, and the impressive Monster, I can't wait to see what other title Viz decide to add to to the imprint.

Vagabond Vol. 21 (Series 2) in June 2006, with a new logo!

With the surprise success of Sexy Voice and Robo, Viz will decide to follow through with the rest of their No. 5 release! Also, they will license the Mindgame manga and release it in their Editor's Choice line with interviews from the original creator! ...In Cloe's dreamland...

All banter aside, I am genuinely looking forward to Ponent Mon's Japan release. It looks very, very good. And anthologies in general are good, because while they are usually a mixed bag, there are always a few memorable gems scattered about.

Pastel — this came out Dec 31st

http://www.randomhouse.com/delrey/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780345486271

Poor Mugi Tadano . . . The sixteen-year-old is heartbroken after his girlfriend moves away. To ease his troubled state, Mugi takes a summer job at his friend Kazuki’s beachside snack bar/hotel on a tropical island. It seems like the perfect plan–until Kazuki sets Mugi up on a date with Yuu, who’s supposed to be, well, a little less than perfect. When Yuu arrives, however, she’s not the monster that either of the boys had imagined. In fact, Yuu is about the cutest person that Mugi has ever seen. But after Mugi accidentally walks in on Yuu in the bath, the girl is steamed. When trying to apologize the next day, he discovers that Yuu has left the shores of paradise. Mugi vows to search high and low for the beautiful Yuu, but will he ever see her again?

I bought this and like it a lot. it has a great feel to it.

School Rumble (february)

i like this one by flipping through the japanese ver at borders. it looks like a fighting/comedy manga.

edit:

Plot Summary: Tsukamoto Tenma is an ordinary 2nd year high school student who has fallen in love with one of her classmates, Karasuma Ooji. However, currently she is unable to confess her feelings to him. To make things worse, she found out that Karasuma is transferring to another school in a year. On the other hand, Tenma's other classmate, Harima Kenji (who is a delinquent) is also in love with Tenma. Not being able to confess his feelings, Harima gets depressed day by day.

whoa, whoa, whoa, stop the presses! The Monster manga has been licensed and is going to be released? I love the Monster anime but I never felt right watching it because I'd so much rather read the manga of a series. But this is great news.

And School Rumble's awesome! It's not exactly a fight/comedy manga.. more like.. comedy/love. Although it throws a lot of elements in there as well. I liked the anime for this as well and will be waiting on a manga release and the 2nd season.

I'm guessing that since they lost Pokemon, 4Kids will have to answer to the stockholders whom will want some sort of "improvement" in their portfolios.

To expand on the idea abit more, I wouldn't be surprised if 4Kids does (begrudgingly) embrace the Otaku Market in 2006 abit more. They need the cash, and this is a untapped market of sorts.

Sorry for double posting, but I just ran across this great piece of news:
http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/7930.html
For those of you too lazy to click on the link, it basically says that Ponent Mon (an obscure manga publisher) will have it's titles distributed to bookstores and specialty stores through a new company starting this year. Hopefully this means that these titles will be much easier to find (and hopefully PM will start trying to sell its books at a more reasonable price). Great news. Now people can actually find their old titles without having to go to the ends of the earth.
