Another win for howl's!
even if howl's isn't the best ghibli movie it is still cool that japanese animation movies are still beating out other productions as well. i have a question, is this award only for limited release movies? |

First, I have to say that Miyasaki Hayao is a god to all people working in the animation industry, including me.
Yet, this time around, I don't think he deserves the best animated feature award. I mean if it was only to be judged on the animation quality, yes, it deserves the award for sure. In fact, I don't think anyone else in the world is making 2D animation with quality higher than Miyasaki sensei's. But a good feature needs good story telling skill as well. And thats what Howl's Moving Castle is lacking. Howl's story was just such a mess! Comparing to Miyasaki's previous works, it also wasn't as imaginative as the others. Even the music wasn't that outstanding either. Howl's Moving Castle has been way too overrated because of the Miyasaki's label. I haven't check what are the other nominees, but I suppose the reason for Howl's winning must be the low in quality for other nominated titles. |

possibly, but in the other award given to howls for music, wallace and gromit won best animated film, so i was wondering if the reason why it won now it's because there are less nominess because its strictly only limited release movies

You know, everyone says that the storytelling in Howl's Moving Castle is flawed, but...why do people think it s flawed? I'm not really sure why people say that...I had no problem at all grasping the story, even the first time I saw it. Miyazaki is spelled with a Z. :) |

Is it possible though that the source material, not the director is to blame moreso? Or would you still consider holding them responsible for taking on such a project and story that may have been sub-par to begin with? |

Actually, the book itself is quite good. I feel that the movie would have been much better if Miyazaki had stuck to the original plot instead of re-working it into more of a war movie. |

The movie followed the book up to about 20 minutes in, then it was something completely different. The original Howl's Moving Castle had a highly entertaining and enchanting story with great characters, character development, and a much better conclusion in my opinion. I think if he went with the original, the movie would of be recieved better, but I understand him wanting to take creative license. The next movie will be based on Earthsea, and I'm already going crazy for the first promo picture. I care not if it's nothing like the books, I'm getting me an animated Earthsea world. |

I actually prefered the movie to the book - Howl's character wasn't so annoying in comparrison
I tend to enjoy Miyazaki's movies for the animation itself, even if the plot is difficult to understand. I'm still not sure if I like this movie or Spirited Away better - once the DVD is released, I'll have a better opinion. |

Yeah, Howl was whiney and a coward in the book, but that puts for a more original male hero in a book than the typical, quiet, depressed, seductive pretty boy you find in most animations. |

I don't think Howl's quite deserves award if the grading is for the story either. It was a good movie, but I thought it could have been more exciting and maybe had a bit more of a punch to it. I saw the movie, and then read the book. I have to say, after seeing goegeous animation mixed with Ghibli's charm, the book was impossible for me to enjoy, and I couldn't help but compare the two.
Joe Hisaishi's award makes perfect sense, I remeber wanting to get the sountrack while seeing the movie in theaters. |

Great soundtrack! I said the same thing when i was watching the film. The songs stuck with me for at least a day, i could not remember them afterwards.
