It seems to me that lot of anime fans here hate Dragonball and it's sequel Dragonball Z. I don't understand why that is. I mean it was one of the major shows that made anime here in the U.S. popular and it created the Shounen branch of anime and manga. With out it there would be no One Piece or Naruto. So why do people here bash it so much?

Not true at all. Was a major breakthrough shounen title? Yes. Created the entire genre? Hardly.

There's a difference between respecting something and disliking something. I acknowledge the fact that DBZ was a huge step in getting anime popular in America. I just don't like DBZ, it was boring and drawn out far more than it needed to be.

Edit: I didn't see that much of Dragon Ball so I can't comment on it.

First off, I like dragon ball. I hate DBZ and DBGT. Secondly, what pantsgoblin said. There's a difference between respect and hating(or dissliking) an anime. I hate Dragon Ball Z but I acknowledge the fact it helped bring in a lot of people into anime. I'll never disagree with that fact but I still have my standards and my opinions and I hate DBZ starting in the middle of the Freeza(however it's spelled) and going through to GT but don't think it's disrespecting it, we all have are opinions about the show. A show that help changed the anime U.S. isn't going to make it more likeable in my eyes.
And IF one day anime becomes rare again in the US because of a certain anime show isn't going to make me hate that show.

Money has people lose focus and deteriorates overall quality, hence I'll never "like" actual popularity. For all I care, anime could've stayed in Japan. Hell I'd be happier if Anime just turns into a niche genre all over the globe with a very few select high quality production studios.

Aside from that, I just dislike DBZ for its low quality.

Well the Dragonball franchise is always gonna remain a kids classic for me. I saw it back when it was airing on FoxKids in the morning. Anyway while I acknowledge its flaws I still like the series for the most part (GT is tough to watch but I like the SS4 designs). At least in my childhood, before there was any DBZ all there was in terms of heroes were G.I. Joe, Spider-Man (he was my favorite super hero when I was little and I'm still a fan, but for the record I'm saying him as well as all other spandex wearing heroes), and Johnny Quest. When DBZ came along, you had these characters who didn't wear costumes, didn't try to hide their identity, and would look at their hand for like 10 minutes (yes it's an exaggeration) and then kill someone with a big laser beam out of their hand. As a kid that was just plain awesome, and they were fast. At least in America, to my knowledge and exposure there was never anything like that before. So the Dragonball franchise will always have a place in my heart as a fan. I still get a kick out of some of the games, and I enjoy the combat (punch/kick flurrys and then just firing giant laser beams). Also, I think it's a good show for kids and I would prefer children get into shows like Dragonball and Naruto as opposed to Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh.

I don't think people hate Dragon Ball. Maybe they just moved on into liking other anime. I did. I liked DBZ but I got used to liking other shows too, something new besides DBZ. You don't expect all of us to respect DBZ all the time, but still it's my opinion. Wink

Agreed. DB and DBZ were gateways into anime for a great many current fans. Taken into account the age group it was meant for, it was a good series. I used to watch DBZ fansubbed before it ever hit CN. What I found was, once I started really getting deeply into the fandom, I grew tired of the repetitive nature of the series, it taking 4 episodes for Goku to power up, that no matter how powerful they got, they would always grow more powerful then that and the like. It's not a bad series, it's just something I've grown beyond. But I fully respect the role it played in my introduction to anime, and to many others similar introduction to it. Incidentally, a friend of mine, who's been into anime for a looong time, still loves the entire DB franchise over anything else.

I respect this show as well due to the fact it was the gateway anime for most anime fans but I also acknowledge the fact that it's not the greatest anime due to it's poor visuals, audio, and pacing compared todays standards.

I hate the fact people say it sucks because they grow so powerful to defeat the "most powerful" villain and yet someone stronger comes out because well thats pretty much any action series. It's to show that they are only getting stronger and just about every series does it in some way or another. Naruto, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X, hell even Mech shows like Gundam and Blue Gender. Even my current most favorite show, Bleach, does it. Always someone stronger no matter how strong you get so I don't know why DBZ is the only one that gets called on it and I always hear people praise Naruto. Different pace, different show, same theory, different method equals pretty much the same thing to me.

After watching a lot of DBZ and DBGT, In Mexico and fan subbed, for as long as I can remember I can honestly say that I am tired of it and when I watch it, it puts me to sleep. Did I always feel the same about these shows? No. Just played out IMO. Some people even feel Cowboy Bebop is played out and that has a much better pacing, music, and animation than DBZ so I hate the fact people always have to call out DBZ on it. I still love Dragonball though that show IS still one of my favorites and I still find the humor funny after all these years.

I still love the DBZ movies thought. I love their pacing and they avoid those "4 episode goku power ups" people seem to always complain about.

Does CN showing the uncut version, with all it's blood, violence and swearing DURING A KIDS' BLOCK give respect to DBZ?

No, it says to the fanboys "LOL WE'RE AIRING TEH UNCUTZ, WE'RE HARDKOR".

Not big on DBZ, hate GT, love DB.

My opinion on this matter is similar to that of most people. I once was very fond of DBZ, but I lost interest in the franchise mainly because the show eventually became, in my point of view, redundant and boring.

That does not mean that I hate DBZ; on the contrary, I respect the show and its creator, Akira Toriyama, for sparking my interest in the world of Japanese animation.

Since this topic is about DragonBall/DBZ/DBGT, could I start a discussion on what could have been done to make the series a better series, if that is allowed?

It has been around for so many years, and I've givin it all the respect it deserves. I've seen both series, and love both of them, but times have changed and I don't feel the need always discuss these two titles as much. So many new and interesting titles that are currently being created that I'd rather watch and discuss.
Besides, it's almost like beating a dead horse when you talk about Dragonball or Dragonball Z because everything has pretty much been said.... That's my opinion at least.

To answer the question as to why Dragonball Z doesn't get the respect that you think it should, I really think the fanbase brought it on themselves. When Dragonball Z was first released in the U.S., it was exteremely popular among mainstream America and would be the only anime some people ever watched and still do. You know the type of fans I'm talking about. Those obessesive fanboys who just love raving about how "tight" the fight scenes in Dragonball Z are. These types of fans hailed Dragonball Z as being the only anime worth watching, that everything else sucked before they've even bothered to watch it, and that watching Sailor Moon made you "ghey." Anybody else remember the days of the infamous Dragonball Z vs. Sailor Moon flame wars? I believe that it is these overly-zealous Dragonball Z fans that made so many anime fans hate Dragonball Z, combined with that the mediocre storylines, stereotypical characters, and slow pacing. While I certainly don't care for Dragonball Z very much, I do still acknowledge that it was a milestone for anime's history in America even if it's not a favorite of mine. Now if only the Dragonball Z fanboys would at least try to watch something else....

Just because its old and there are newer stuff doesn't mean it sucks. Just because some don't like it doesn't mean that it isn't one of the greatest. It gets hated on because it's popular. It's that simple.
