I´ve been downloading this series, is it legal if the series is unlicensed in the US? Is it licensed? But anyway I have been wondering if a planned US release has been announced. I have been enjoying the series, I´m at episode 18, and I´m just wondering when I´ll be able to own them on DVD.

In all likelyhood, a Bleach US announcement/broadcast/DVD release wont be happening for some time, assuming (and this is very likely) Viz Media wants it. One they get a full-run (or close to) of Naruto and have successfully merchandised, or are about 2/3rds the way through, the shit out of it, they'll be wanting something else to market.
So I'd give Bleach two years or so....

I doubt it'd be that long. It'd be a waste of money to not have both series running, because within two years some other show will rise up with a lot of buzz. I bet we'll see an announcement within a year, possibly less.

Is there a reason why you guys think that Viz will be the one to license Bleach and we have to wait for them?
Why wouldnt someone else have an opportunity to license? I think Bleach is geared for a different target audience that Naruto was anyway.

Viz has the manga already. And they've also got the experience of marketing long series (like all those long Takahashi titles). More than likely, with all the buzz surrounding Bleach, they feel they can capitalize on both the anime and manga. But of course, they just recently started Naruto, so they probably wouldn't want to attempt dual marketing (unless they're super confidant in thinking they can). I've yet to see Bleach, myself, so I'm not really into the buzz yet and don't mind waiting.

So what if they already have the manga rights. Dragonball/Z, Shaman King, Yugioh, and One Piece are all licensed by other companies.
Manga licensing and anime licensing are quite often done seperately, in my experience.

[flamebait]4Kids always take a creak at it.[/flamebait] But really now, how many long did it take Naruto to get picked up. 120 or so episodes, which is around 3 years after it hit the TV over there. Yeah, that is a long time, but it was fought over, and Viz/ShoPro won out. Steven is right, it might be a while before see Bleach on this side of pond, and let's face it, it's anybody game as long they bring their American Express.

Interesting that Geneon is already indirectly involved in the production, thanks for the info Advent_Nebula.
Maybe someone who has kept up with the manga can let us know how much further ahead the manga is as compared the anime, and roughly how many manga chapter translate to one anime episode?
From just watching the anime, it seems to me at least that the current story arc is wrapping up, and not sure what direction they can really take the series once it does. I just assumed that this is the final season currenly airing.
Don't know, perhaps if the show really is that successful, they will continue the anime beyond what I had expected.

Each Bleach episode is 2.8 manga chapters. Episode 57 ended on chapter part way through chapter 162. The manga is up to chapter 203.

Hmm, if my calculations are right, that means about 15 more episodes to catch up to the manga chapter 203, which brings the anime to episode 72.
Then 6 more episodes to complete the season, which is about 17 more chapters of manga.
Think it's possible it might end at that point?
I know, I'm pushing it

Kinda. Expect fillers!
Anyway, the reason why Shaman King/One Piece/DBZ were licensed by other companies was because at the time of their purchase, Sheuisha hadn't set up office in the US, nor banded with a specific distribution/production company.
It might take some time, more than a year I'd imagine, for it to be licensed, since they'd want a clearer idea of how many episodes there will be, and whether they could or could not market it alongside Bleach (it's one thing to compete against someone, it's another to compete against yourself).
Bleach is aimed at the exact same market as Naruto, so uhh.. eh?

Naruto was probably delayed in licensing because they had no idea how long it would be and thus didn't know what the licensing costs would be. Bleach might be the same way; I wouldn't mind seeing the anime end at episode 70-something, after the end of the current arc, but given its popularity, they'll probably continue. The "Who will license Bleach?" question has been asked many times, and my picks are mainly Viz or Geneon for the reasons described above. Funimation might go for it, and ADV and Bandai are a little less likely, IMO. I can't really see TRSI or Media Blasters picking it up, though.

Yeah, ADV and Bandai don't usually seem to go for longer series, I'd say VIZ would be the best bet since they already have several simmiliar titles like Inu Yasha and Naruto. On the other hand that could work to discourage their liscensing of Bleach as well too as they may not want to commit to another long running Shounen series. However, I wouldn't count Funimation out either nor would I mind at all if Geneon picks it up since both companies have good dubbing. Excellent series so far though, I hope when/if it gets liscensed it will be treated right.
