Well, this was actually one of my favorite arcs doing its run. I remembered the Kakashi Chronicles very clearly and re-watched it several times, one of the best part of the arc indeed.
Hmm, I did enjoy the Sasuke vs Deidara/Itachi fights as well as the Pain vs. Jiraya fights so a bit surprised about the story grade here in this review.

Makes you wonder why they didn't use the Kakashi backstory to make a decent movie for once, and save the TV series' already low budget for the important fights. Sasuke vs. Orochimaru was so disappointingly animated.

Just thought I'd mention the Kakashi part isn't really filler as it's in the manga. I could see how it might appear to be for a TV watcher though.

Carlo Santos continues to surprise me with his reviews. How is it that Kakashi's backstory is filler if it was shown even in the manga? If I remember Sasuke did not even use a new technique against Deidara so it was just Deidara trying to come up with new moves?

It was filler when it originally ran as manga as well...the main story was on a long hiatus so Kakashi Gaiden was done to fill some of the time gap.

Even a manga can have filler, though in that case it's more up to the individuals judgement if the content fits in well enough with the overall story to qualify as filler or not. So it does become somewhat subjective in this case.

I agree that manga can have filler but.... If it is the back-story of one of the main characters should it really be considered as filler? The placement of the back-story may have been poorly chosen, perhaps it would have been better to show it when Kakashi dies (temporally) during Pains attack on Konoha but I still think it is an important part of the story so I don't think it really classifies as a filler in the traditional sense.

I don't remember any filler in this group of episodes, and Sasuke's fight is not too long, it's a good length not too long or too short. A damn sight better then Kisame's short one episode fight later on against Guy.
But yeah tbh Sasuke's friends are bloody awful and those episodes hurt to watch. But after this disc all the canon is all brilliant.

Kakashi Chronicles is really good, but I wonder why it was put in Shippuden. In the manga it happened right after Naruto left the village to train in pt.1.

Wow. I respect your opinion, but I loved this batch (although the next box-set is even better!), but also, I loved the Deidara vs. Sasuke match. I thought it was very good.
But I'll admit, Sasuke's new teammates aren't very interesting characters.

Both fans of the anime and manga will enjoy this set. The reviewer does a good job at discussing the critical flaws of the anime.
Of course, writing a review for fans who have gotten this far in a "never-ending" story is an exercise in the unnecessary. It is nice to have a professional concision of the anime though. If the anime didn't have to married to a certain pacing - it would be quite excellent.
Alas, such are the banes of producing anime for shonen series.

After this show got removed from XD's lineup, I forgot all about staying interested in it. I can't even seem to remember where I last was. It's fine though, I've been over my Naruto phase since last year.
