Street cred

"The art of circle strafing". Jesus. They don't force people to use text prompts anymore, do I get to pretend I'm better than everyone else because I grew up on Sierra adventure games in the 80s that required you to guess what the game wanted you to type?

Everyone knows Lucas Arts was the better of the two.

But seriously, playing System Shock 2 then going to Bioshock, or Deus Ex to Human Revolution, or heck, Duke Nukem to Duke Nukem Forever or anything like that, it's just facepalm worthy. They've all been dumbed down so much for this generation (or more specifically: consoles) and the sad part is there's more money to be made there so companies will keep doing it.

As a fellow video editor, I can tell you that Vegas is a godsend. It is SO MUCH easier to use (and less faultier) than Movie Maker and the Sharpen feature makes my videos look brand new Very Happy

I was surprised to hear that both Hope and Zac were still disappointed with Dragon Ball Z Kai, considering that it cuts down on the aforementioned "padding" of the original rather significantly.

I was surprised when Hope said that the responses to video reviews were more vitriolic. I had expected the opposite to be true because I thought that seeing the reviewer’s eyes, even though that’s minimal in Hope’s reviews, and hearing the reviewer’s voice would trigger a little moderating compassion. I had also thought that the possibility of the reviewer having control over the tone voice for the review would have a moderating effect compared to a written review wherein the person reading can impute any tone into the words and will tend to accentuate the negative. Well, glad I asked then.

99% of video reviews tend to just be people trying to copy the AVGN (swearing, stupid skits, and so forth). Most video 'reviews' don't actually review what they're talking about; most of them just fall into the pit of "describing the thing scene by scene while making jokes about what's going on the screen" like Nostalgia Critic. That's not what reviewing actually is. Very rare will you get the opposite, like Derek in Happy Video Game Nerd, who actually reviews, gasp, good things, rather than being yet another angry video reviewer that's over-saturated the internet. Written reviews are better by default because of that.

I don't get why torture porn doesn't work as a term in this case. Considering what porn used to be it's considerably watered down to where it means just about anything you are into, at the moment or in general. (ie. 'OMG! Walking Dead is sooo my porn right now!').

'whatever-porn'

Shoes are now commonly referred to 'porn for women'. The band Porno for Pyros was(if I'm not mistaken)named from viewing the fires of the L.A. riots on TV.

I suppose this angers the OG porno enthusiasts who want to reclaim it. To return it to it's proper stature.

On the serious side, I do thin there are cases where words really need to mean what they are supposed to, but considering that "Porn" hasn't stopped meaning what it means while being co-opted. I'm not to concerned.

Besides sexual aspect of the thing labelled porn may not always be present on the screen but present in the viewer's mind. Japan has a long history of inserting(no pun intended) symbolism for just this purpose.

The argument is that you watch Battle Royale to see the main character escape, not to see the characters get killed in gruesome ways. It would be like calling the Hunger Games torture porn. I wouldn't compare Battle Royale to something like Hostel or Human Centipede.

There's enough murder and variety of murder (and suicide) that one could watch Battle Royale just for that. Leaving that as my full statement, however, would be disingenuous, as I have at least seen the live-action movie (one of the movies?), and there's enough characterization and plot that the violence is more of a means than an end for it. However, if one knows only the premise of the title, that a class of high school students are forced to murder each other or die, it sounds like the kind of thing that would be torture porn.

I disagree with the idea that viewers/readers require a review to have a score to summarize at the end. I think if JO personally dropped that aspect from her reviews, the complaints would be more motivated by the removal of such a signature trait rather than the loss of information. It's not infrequent that comments claim to predict what her score for a show would be by the time it arrived, as JO's presentation is commendably consistent in her relation of how she esteems a series. As a different example, Arkada from D2 concludes with a brief lists of major pros and cons of a series, and maybe a buy/rent/skip suggestion.

Ack, sorry I must have read NISA for one of the other Persona-series video games.

Which is great, I like Section 23, all the better.

Actually, several voice actors have publicly stated that they are currently having studio recording sessions for a Persona 4 English dub (i.e. Amanda Winn Lee).

I wouldn't jump the gun just yet. It's very possible they might have gone back for extra "Persona 4: The Golden" work so Atlus USA can get a Vita game out the door ASAP. It very well could be the anime, but I wouldn't call it confirmed.

Yeah, I was about to bring that up. It could be for The Golden, or the Persona fighting game (which Atlus USA has confirmed for release), unless they specifically said anime, I wouldn't confirm Sentai has re-united the cast.

It's also interesting to see no one ever cares about the Vancouver voice acting scene, haha. I guess people know that anime is just a drop in an ocean (PUN INTENDED HECK YEAH) for Vancouver audio work.

Never judge a book by its cover or plot summary in this case.

Scores are good mainly for two things: the first is in replace of a review you simply say a number for example "Gundam 0080: War in the pocket was amazing, it get's 10/10", the fact that it get's 10 out of 10 would be useless if I talked about it in depth. The second is to categorize reviews, when Anime Jump was still around I would occasionally go to the reviews with the lowest stars because usually they where the funniest.

When I watch JesuOtaku's videos I usually ignore the score.

What a waste it would be if people skimmed over something with merit because the premise didn't sound appealing. There's certainly more to go on, be it source material or staff involved. Ultimately, if people don't see it there's not much to say.

I have to agree with Zac about Episode 23 of Evangelion.

At first, I thought it was going to be baiting female BL fans to watch the series. Eventually, the very brief relationship between the two actually does become quite touching. As the Angel of Free Will, I found it quite sad that Kaworu ended up caring for his enemy. I found it similar to the idea of Platonic Love rather than satirizing yaoi cliches in Shonen anime.

I'm actually quite curious how the third Rebuild film will treat Shinji & Kaworu's relationship. [/u]

I think Porn (famously?)was once defined as(or described as) 'I can't tell you what it is , but I know it when I see it.' I think that was in the context of a court case.

I can appreciate the desire to have something one likes not be reduced to it's most negative context, but people do it all the time. It's a matter of taste that potentially (depending on the person) renders all the parts you like into vapor at the expense of all the things that another person else likes.

Like a BLT sandwich.

Vegetarian eats just the lettuce and tomato(and bread?), carnivore eats just the bacon, omnivore 1 eats all but lettuce, omnivore 2 eats it all. etc

Between peoples' compartmentalizing combined with their blind-spots you end up with their experience as a localized truth. I think there's also room for denial, peer pressure and spite to shape opinion, but that just might be my 'truth.'

I contend that apples are oranges and forks are spoons. You can't tell me I'm wrong because it's my very own personal truth that I am entitled to. Hey wait, where are you going...?

"America is a fairly progressive country..."

My own dad believes that women are useful mainly to pump out babies and cook shit for their husbands. He thinks women that DON'T want to just be housewives and live independently are "strange".

America is NO WHERE NEAR progressive. I can't believe someone actually said that.

EDIT: Oh shit now one of you guys called Negima bad, screw this.
