I wonder if they will still have people pay money for content that everyone else (Nintendo, Sony, and PC) gives for free.

I find it more interesting that someone berated me for using Kotaku as a source, yet ANN can use it without impunity.

Microsoft has been saying this for nearly a year, but it seems some people just won't accept this until the doors of E3 close for the year and no "720" was shown.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the next version of the console doesn't hit the market until 2014.
The last thing Microsoft wants to be is an Apple clone, goading millions to repurchase equipment that doesn't need to be replaced.

At this point they can still milk another year out of 360 what with Kinect and all. Sony is in the same spot with Move and Vita. There's no need to replace it just yet.

I'm talking about being able play your game online for free.

Vita is a handheld console. I don't see how that is milking the PS3. I don't have a Vita so I don't know . But my 3DS hasn't made me want play the Wii.

Vita from what I remember has more direct compatibility, but either way, my point is the peripherals have increased the life expectancy of both consoles.

Did you use a press release by Kotaku or one of their opinionated editorials? Opinions as sources are never good.
Also I hear the rumor floating around is no blu-ray for it since Microsoft doesn't want to pay it's rival Sony for the technology, so they're trying to make up their own game format for better storage capacity (popular rumor is memory cards like the Vita uses )

If so, that'd be stupid on their part since they want the Xbox to be an entertainment hub that plays everything, what with Xbox Live TV tied in with Windows 8 on PCs, tablets, and phones. And it's not like they're not sitting on $50 billion cash on hand. Maybe they just really don't wanna help out Sony who's been in the red 4 straight years..............

I don't think it's a dumb move. I think they are going to focus more on the streaming services. While DVD's aren't going away any time soon, I think in the next 10 years we'll see a stronger shift towards that kind of service as streaming technology improves.
And I'm also guessing that Sony will be announcing some sort of pay structure after seeing the mountain of cash Microsoft got from the 360.

Another rumor that is floating around is two tiers for the next-gen - one that can only play the new games and have no optical drive (essentially media hub that can play games) and one that has the whole she-bang that includes 360 backwards compatibility.
But, with the MS trying to position the 360 as an all-in-one entertainment setup, I can see them pushing the 360 until 2013.

This was expected; as they probably wanted to launch it at their new "non-CES" press conference. Guess they are trying to become like apple?
