Why only 73 of the 78 episodes? Also, why wasn't the last "season" (someone please tell me why Japan has yearlong "seasons") put in the U.S.? |

Monster Rancher isn't exactly a very popular show. It was mainly brought in to the states to cash in on the cutesy monster anime trend that Pokemon ushered in.

I don't think it was necessarily trying to "outdo" pokemon. I just think it didn't get enough "love". In the midst of the whole crazy "Mon" phaze, this one, unfortunately, was overlooked.
I actually liked the Monster Rancher Anime better than both Pokemon and Digimon. The bad thing for me was I was unable to see regular episodes of it, as it was syndicated. Pokemon and Digimon both had regular time slots in my town, but my favorite "Mon" show didn't. Pokemon was ok, but there were so many different pokemons, and so many "life lessons"... it just got corny. The only saving grace for me was what stupid thing will James do today. Digimon was cool, but I just couldn't keep track of all the "mon" names. It was too unoriginal in that sense, and too hard for me to remember who turned into who. I did enjoy the movie, but for the most part, the series just sort of fizzled for me. Monster Rancher, however, got me hooked from the start. I may be a bit biased, as I was playing the game back on my Playstation at the time, but I really enjoyed it. I liked that in the game there were unlimited ammounts of different creatures depending on what CD you inserted. I also liked that is was similar to pokemon, but more focused on training and tournaments. This was the beginning of my RPG burn-out, so Pokemon was loosing steam on my GBC, and the structure of training and praising or scolding your monster got me hooked more personally than just using different "summons" like Pokemon. When I started watching the Monster Rancher show, I was at first curious as there's not much story in the game. But the way it played out in the show was good and got me interested. I also noticed a bunch of the creatures I remember from playing the game. Not as many as in Pokemon, but I had a closer interaction with the MR creatures in the game, so I was more attached to them. Another thing I liked about the show was there were no stupid Team Rocket bad guys. And sure, there was the sickiningly cute Mochii, but most of the other Monsters - Monsters Inc reject Suezo, the wolf Tiger, the rabbit Hare - weren't as bad. They all had actually a personality rather than "pika pika!". So sure, Monster Rancher might not have been the most "popular", but it can deffinately hold its own, and has some great features that the others are missing. IMO, it the best of the late 90s "Mon" shows. |

man, I loved Monster Rancher. I hardly ever saw it, and my friends made fun of me for liking it (even though some of them were avid DBZ and Hamtaro fans), but I still liked it
