Ugh, what a dreadful newspaper.
Yay for female otaku, though.

Pretty ordinary paper.
Wonder why it took them so long to discover female otaku?
Actually the Wai Wai section is translated reports from the tabloids, int his case SPA!

There's a phrase needed to be clarified: "yucky" girls. It's most likely to be fujoshi (腐女子), a derogatory term (also banned from broadcasting media in Japan; a housou kinshi yougo (放送禁止用語)) for BL- and yaoi-loving female otaku.
I have no idea what "hip to be square" can be, though.

Derogative term or not, most fujoshi don't shy away from applying it to themselves. Yay for fujoshi!

LOL...I knew that sounded familiar but I couldn't quite place it.
I'm glad female otaku are getting market attention. Go girls!

The only "Hip to be Square" song I know is the one in Sesame Street about elementary geometry.
That also brings to mind Madonna's "Material Girl", which was sung on Sesame Street as "Cereal Girl", and was about the various foods people have for breakfast. X_x
