This entire incident turned out to be much bigger in scope, and more serious, than I initially thought.
I really hope, if MU turns out to be truly guilty, that they get punished for the right reasons rather than under the blanket generalisation that all file sharing sites/software are evil criminal creations with the sole purpose of undermining copyright. |

Thank goodness MegaUpload is shut down, maybe now more people will be buying anime, instead of illegally downloading it for free.

Thank goodness we've wiped out polio, maybe now people will live forever! MU was just a drop in the piracy bucket. |

Megaupload is the only way you get your anime, so please, stop. You can just Google "Baby Naruto Megaupload" and there's so much stuff that you've uploaded and also have asked to be uploaded. |

There are other file sharing sites that host illegal copyrighted material for free download? Huh, I never knew. |

I know I'll be lambasted for it, but I'll still say it. I hope people realize that filesharing sites also have legitimate people using them to share their own material, be it documents, photos, videos they themselves made, etc. Shutting down easy to to use filesharing sites is hurting the internet culture and communication. Pirates can use any means necessary to do illegal activities, but that can mean sending manga files over e-mail if need be.
These sites are not inherently bent on sharing illegal IPs, same with bittorrent. That's just how people wind up using them. And no, shutting down torrents and filesharing won't force anyone into buying materials again, not at retail price anyway. People use iTunes and YouTube to listen to their music these days. |

MegaUpload getting shut down is just the tip of the iceberg, ladies and gentlemen. Soon torrent sites and other major file hosting sites will follow. Worse, if SOPA/PIPA get passed, even more will get closed.

I figured it was a matter of time before stuff started to happen. I only knew of a few subbers that used MegaUpload, and they already said how they will be moving onto other similar sites.
Oh, and of course Annonymous went on a shut down rampage and shut down the FBI's website, RIAA, and a few other sites already. |

My friend, You have no idea how deep this rabbit hole really is. The thing is there are MANY others that will pick up MU's slack. The fearful thing is that this might start a "Cyberwar" of sorts. |

I'm happy and upset at this turn of events.
I'm happy because sites should not allow downloading and streaming of licensed(in the U.S.) works and has a physical release for free and/or for a price that is not someway linked to the original creator. Plus, this starts creating roadblocks for those that only download/stream illegally and never buy, because they can get it for free. I'm upset because this also targets titles not licensed in the United States, some without any sign of being licensed either. |

Really..... Even if there was no other way of getting anime, they still wouldn't buy it. People that love anime will buy it, those that don't won't. It shouldn't be that hard to understand. Sure, a minority of those might change their ways, but not enough to make any difference. |

I feel about the same. MegaUpload was where I got a few titles that weren't licensed in North America. Of course, like I said in my other post, they have already moved onto similar sites. I do wonder what the outcome of this will be... Government shutting down more of these sort of sites, annonymous shutting down more .gov sites etc, possibly finding people's private info and exposing it, and so forth? I dunno, this war sounds like it may get rather large... |

oh thank god.. i love mega upload but mega video was a piss poor streaming service. Now my friend that makes excuses for not being able to watch anime legally will have to via stream. Mind you he lives where I do, Just to lazy to make an account at CR or any other legal site because of ads. On the downside.. well it's still wack a mole at this point in time. I remember the buzz when Napster was shut down and everyone thought it was the end of the world that no more music would be downloaded for free.. we saw how long that lasted. Edit for my own stupidity... dangit it's late. Last edited by Cecilthedarkknight_234 on Fri Jan 20, 2012 1:25 am; edited 1 time in total |
