I don't really care about the visuals. I like an anime with good story and characters.

Well, Naruto and Bleach have astounding animation, same for GITS SAC........alot of the newer stuff is breaking new ground with animation techniques. The new Samurai Seven (7) looks super fluid.......

It's all quite... you know, based on your opinion... I tend to think that BERSERK looks nice, but the vast majority says hell no...
ANYWAY, I'm a HUGE MADHOUSE fan, and I tend to think that their productions always look the most solid
Sure, IG, Bones, Deen, Gonzo etc. are pretty good, but there's just that little something missing...
I tend to like MADHOUSE a lot since the art scheme for their different shows tend to look great AND original in art style... Notice how X doesn't look anything like GUNGRAVE or how neither looks like TEXHNOLYZE... it's that vast
If anything, the common thing I can find *when they are at the best levels of production of course*
Smooth curves, liquid framerates, lots of shades
But really, it depends on what you think

Talk about visual... there's one Anime that suddenly popped out in my head when I read visual and that would be Air TV, the facial, the hair, the clothes, the background, the.... anyway everything looks alive and bright. Well... if we will switch to a weird one, that would be Gankutsou (aka The Count of Monte Cristo), the show is good, but the visual seems a bother to me, I guess I need to adapt it's beauty

Like DKL wrote it's loosely based on a person opinion.
But for me I have to go with Macross Zero, I was quite taken with it's animation also the cg scene was awesome, and one of my friend pointed that even the shadow look realistic.
Other than that probably Blue Submarine No.6 and Vandread. Both have a blend of cg. Well that's one person opinion.

Certainly Air needs to be mentioned in any discussion of anime visuals. Then there are all of Shinkai Makoto's works - they have the same stunning effect.
But for me, one anime takes it a step further: Chikyuu Shoujo Arjuna. Right from the start, the visual impact is amazing. From the moment in episode 1 when Arjuna is riding a motorcycle with her boyfriend, the visuals overwhelm and dominate the viewer. Add to that the many "special-effects"-type visuals (which I won't go into, for fear of spoiling too much), and the series is just breathtakingly beautiful.

Thats because those three productions are worked on, directed, and designed by completely different people.

Well... yeah... but, you know, it's under one house name *Okay, so that's a lame reason*
But... ummm... lemme be more specific, I notice how other animation companies for the most part handle like, different shows *of course*, but then some times, they would look somewhat the same since they have like a shared art scheme *or something*
Like how, if you look at one BEE TRAIN production, for the most part you can tell that it's them between the different shows mainly since they look kinda, the same *this isn't necessarily a bad thing, I mean, if you like the look, then you're all set*
And like, how BONES uses the same ways to draw their characters even under different character designers
Goes the same with PIERROT, AIC and DEEN
*Er... I'm not saying that this is bad, I actually like shows from all these studios... except BEE TRAIN I guess... I can't seem to get into their stuff (my fault)*
All the MADHOUSE shows I've seen seem to be very wild and varied in design, but then high in quality *when they're at their best of course*
If I had to point out anything wrong with MADHOUSE, it would be because the level of art and animation reaches such a high place, when it drops, it's extremely noticable *I've been bothered by it on occasion, but what are you gonna do?*
Well, I'm pretty new to "the game", so it could be that I don't know any better... so sorry if I didn't put it through any better than this
*is in fear of mass pwnage*

There are two issues when it comes to visuals. Most everyone so far has been thinking of production values, in which case the visuals of GITS, whatever incarnation you happen to pick, are top of the line. The second issue is artistry, and even a low budget show can do good on that. I've always been amazed at the visuals of Escaflowne, even though the production values are not that great. I am still amazed by the detail of the cities and various mecha designs. With its bigger budget the movie does justice to the beautiful artwork of the series, giving crisp lines and added detail to all the characters. The opening scene of the movie which shows Van descending from the sky is a great example of what I mean by great visuals.

Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes!!! Thank you, abunai! Everything about Arjuna is done exactly right. I know the exact point in the show you're talking about as well (it's the main reason I chose "Cloe" as my ANN name!) and it is indeed stunning. I was moved to tears the first time I saw it... and, well, every subsequent time I watched it as well.
Now, being an animator, "good visuals" sets off a little bell in my head that chimes "how is the animation quality?" This can mean anything from "How smooth is the movement?" to "How creative are the keyframes?" to "How accurate is the timing?" A few titles that fulfill all of these stipulations are as follows:
Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell: Innocence: The first film I regard as a modern masterpiece and the second I loathe with all my being, but they both have amazing animation quality. The character's movements are smooth and well-timed and perfectly capture the motion of real, living people. And I'm always impressed at the shot in GITS where Makoto breaks her arms off and all of the little bitty mechanical parts fly in every which direction. Wow.
Tokyo Godfathers: Out of all of Satoshi Kon's work (which is all amazing), I think the key animation in Tokyo Godfathers is the most creative and innovative. Take a moment, those of you who own the DVD, to watch the scene in the hospital where Hana is yelling at Gin frame-by-frame and check out how incredible every frame looks. It's like Looney Tunes all over again, with all of the exaggeration and expression. Really, really amazing stuff.
Memories: All three of the short films that make up Memories has brilliant animation, but I'm thinking of "Magnetic Rose" and "Cannon Fodder" in particular. Magnetic Rose's character animation has the same smoothness and grounds in reality as the GITS films and incredible detail. Cannon Fodder's animation is amazing to me because of how much personality is present in every character's movement. The little boy's trot is rambunctious and energetic, his father's slumped shoulders are heavy with dashed hopes, and the husky man who fires the cannon displays his power and assurance with each confident stride.
Any Studio Ghibli film: Like 'em or hate 'em, the films that come from this studio have a consistently high animation quality that is challenged by few and far between.
Now, with all of that behind all of us, "good visuals" doesn't necessarily have to refer to animation quality at all, but art direction, backgrounds, character designs, color palette and the like. Usually shows that feature unusual choices in colors and pattern stick in my mind the most. A few of those are as follows:
Shoujo Kakumei Utena (TV series and feature film): The animation itself is nothing to be excited about--although it improves drastically in the movie--but the choices in color, background art, and direction in general blow me away with its creativity. I love the strange romantic borders around the screen that pop up sometimes for little or no reason, as well as the various spinning roses. I love the stylized character designs and unique background art, and that upside-down spinning castle is just awesome.
Gankutsuou: I've only seen a teeny weeny bit of this show, but I just LOVE the color and pattern choices for clothing, hair and what-not. It's incredibly beautiful to look at, and has a distinctive style not often seen outside of independent animation.
Cat Soup: Speaking of independent animation, this short film looks as if it were a festival piece rather than an anime (which it kind of is). I love the stylistic character designs and color palette. It has one of the most unique looks out of any animated film to come out of Japan.
Mind Game: Now, this film is probably THE most visually stunning anime I have ever seen because not only does it have absolutely beautiful and creative animation, but its art is extremely idiosyncratic and a marvel to look at. The character designs are a little off-beat compared to what's found in most anime (my avatar is one of the main characters from the film) and there are mixtures of photography in much of the animation as well. This film uses many, many more mediums than one would normally think suitable for a mainstream animated feature. Besides photography and live-action footage, there are pastel and water-color sequences that look like they came from an Impressionist painting in motion than anything else. The only consistency in the animation is its habit of constently changing. One minute it will look completely smooth, the other second it looks like it was animated by Bill Plympton. But it completely works. The camera angles, editing, everything. It all adds up to create a one-of-a-kind experience.

I'd have to agree that Macross Zero has some of the best visuals I've ever seen in Anime, from the amazing dogfights to the character animations. Top-quality production.
