Well, Funi would like to get Kodocha on television in the United States but... eh... I wouldn't hold your breath that any channels might be interested.

thanks for telling me but i remember seeing an article about this and it said " Kodocha is a zany, energetic comedy and we have been having a great time getting it ready for its U.S. debut in August 2005. The website (www.kodocha.tv) will be up at the beginning of June. We know a lot of fans are dying for information on the series, so we just released the official cast list."

The "debut" is on DVD. As far as I know, no channel is interested in Kodocha. The "TV" really only means that they registered a URL with the suffix for the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu; yeah, they want to get it on TV, but it'll probably always be just wishful thinking.

Someone asked Sean AKins at Comic-Con whether or not Kodocha would end up on TV, and he said that while they were always looking for new stuff from FUNimation, there weren't any current plans to air Kodocha.

I don't know who "they" are, but CN doesn't show any indications of being interested in shoujo shows. Yeah, they played Sailor Moon once upon a time ago, but that turned out to be an evolutionary dead end which led to nothing else of the sort being played on the channel.
They could always emphasize the comedy aspect instead of the shoujo aspect, but "anime", "comedy" and "good ratings" are not words you'd often hear being all used together in the same sentence over at Williams Street. |

Well, although not Anime, Totally Spies is sort of headed that direction. That show is deffinately aimed at younger girls, but what does CN expect them to watch once they start getting older? Yes, by mentioning this show, I am fully aware I've opened up the flame-gates, but is it too far off to possibly see a Shoujo block on CN? I'd figure that there's plenty of programming for them to chose from, and it wouldn't all have to be Shoujo - just titles that wouldn't necessarily fit with [AS] ACTn or whatever they're calling it now. Stuff like Tenchi, (yes allready played before, but not really ACTN material) Love Hina, Fruits Basket, Fushigu Yuugi and Ah! My Goddess are all quality shows and would seem to be prime candidates. These shows might also attract men looking for something different, or a change of pace, and not necessarily drive off the core audience. I know how well [AS] does with men and all the numbers there, but I know a lot of women around my age (early 20s) who watch it also. Thing is, they only seem to like some shows - InuYasha, .Hack//Sign, and FLCL (and Teen Titans, for some strange reason). Would there be enough of a viewership base to support a more female oriented block? Or are the current numbers too good to mess with that they're (CN) not even interested? |

That's a non-starter, unless they start a second or third CN channel. Generally, it's a lot easier for a show targetted towards a male demographic to attract a female crossover audience than it is the other way around. An "all-girl" block would likely alienate half the potential audience and not pull in the same amount of advertising dollars. The farthest CN seems willing to go is with unisex appeal shows like Powerpuff Girls and the French import Totally Spies, but those shows have comedic action to balance out the female protagionists. Kodocha would just be too girly girl for most male CN viewers outside of the anime fandom niche. Maybe, one day in the future with increased narrowcasting, they'd have "CN Pink", a spin-off network targetted specifically for girls, and then shoujo shows will stand a chance, but, until then, people hoping to get their shoujo fix on CN will continually be disappointed. |
