I have on four occasions I have ended up with Vol 2 soundtracks either as gifts bought on whim in at least two cases, more evocative of the show (X, Arjuna). In three cases, (Wolf's Rain, Arjuna, X) had clearly more enjoyable music. Only on one occasion have the vols 1 one and 2 been about equal (Last Exile).

I'm begining to wonder, are the Japanese soundtrack producers "holding back" on the good stuff?

All the Best,

Nani?

I think it may just depend on the series; I don't know why OST producers would be "holding off" for the first release, though... I mean, logically, they want lots of people to enjoy the first soundtrack so they can release more, right? But I agree, Nani?, that the 2nd OST is often much more enjoyable than the first. I have to admit I like the first Arjuna OST better myself, and I hold the two Wolf's Rain OSTs as pretty much equal ("Tell Me What the Rain Knows" is Oooooh so pretty, though Wink ). But out of the soundtracks with multiple volumes I have (they're mostly Kanno... Embarassed ), my enjoyment is as follows:

Please Save my Earth OSTs - I really think the 1st and 3rd OSTs are matched in enjoyability and quality of music (2nd one is not so great). The 3rd OST gets extra points for "Kiniro no Toki Nagarete," which is one of my favorite songs. This may be a special case, since these are actually "image albums," but whatever.

Macross Plus OSTs - I like the 1st one the best out of these, actually. The second one is a bit eclectic for my taste (I still enjoy it, though) and For Fans Only is a little redundant. Cream P.U.F. is lots of fun, and it's the only place to find "Borderline," but it's really, really short. (Just 4 songs? C'mon.)

Escaflowne OSTs - The 3rd OST and Lovers Only are my two favorites here. I really think they did save the best for last in this case. "Aoi Hitomi" is the reason that the 3rd OST is almost constantly in my CD player.

Brain Powered OSTs - The 2nd OST is far superior to the first one, in my opinion. I enjoy "Light of Love" more than the similar-sounding "Ai no Rinkaku" on the first OST and the symphonic pieces (especially "Prism," "Aurora" and "Smile"--one of my favorite short symphonic pieces EVER) are more lush than the first OST pieces as well.

Cowboy Bebop OSTs - I like the 3rd OST, Blue, the best. It has most of my favorite songs from the series on it, including "Wo Qui Non Coin" and "Adieu." It also had more of a variety of music styles, as the first soundtrack was all Seatbelts stuff.

Turn A Gundam OSTs - I'm not sure about this... The Turn-A OSTs as a whole make up my very favorite body of Yoko Kanno's work, and I hold each of them in equal reverence. I guess I would have to pick the Concert Album if I was forced to pick a favorite, because of the beautiful orchestral rendition of "Felicity/Back to the River."

Stand Alone Complex OSTs - I definitely like Be Human more than the first OST. I'm not sure why though... I guess the light-heartedness of these tracks was a nice shift after the heavy-handedness of the first OST. 2nd Gig OST is taking a while to grow on me, but it's completely worth it to hear the full version of "To Tell the Truth."

.hack//SIGN OSTs - I like the first one the best. The 2nd OST is just more of the same, and I guess I'm especially partial to "Key of the Twilight."

FLCL OSTs - The first OST has almost every song I like from the series, which makes it the CD I listen to more often, but the 2nd OST has "Crazy Sunshine," which is my favorite song in the series. Anime cry So I'm kind of torn there.

Evangelion OSTs - The first one is the best as far as the TV series goes. But my favorite overall is Day of Second Impact, as it has almost all of the pieces I recognize and none of the extra fluff.

Er... I probably own a lot more multiple soundtracks than that (I can't be too sure, as I'm not at home), but this is enough for me to argue that the 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) OSTs are often just as good as, if not better than, the original.

I have the Noir OST 1&2 and IMHO the OST 1 is better. It contains most of the "famous" Noir songs, the ones who are repeated all the time during the series. On the OST 2 there are also some good ones but I don't think these songs have a big influence on the series (or at least not as much as the ones on OST 1)...
I don't have other soundtracks... Sad

For Wolf's Rain, the second OST is definitely better. The music is heavier and more emotional than the first ("Friends", "Beyond Me", "Go To Rakuen", "Tell Me What The Rain Knows", "Sad Moon" versus "Gravity" Laughing ).

For Ghost In The Shell: Standalone Complex, Be Human and the first OST were pretty much equal. They really balanced each other out. Same for Arjuna.

You know, it's kind of nice it's only me getting paranoid rather then reality being as twisted as I sometime start to percieve it.

I just got the 3rd FLCL OST. It only has the Pillows songs, but they are full versions with the original Japanese lyrics. Kinda nice.

I like the Noir OST2. Some of the "remixes" of tracks on there - like Solva Nos and and Canta Per Me - are good. But overall, not as good as OST1. The Noir BLANC OST (OST3?) is kind of cool, too. It has Japanese versions of some of the Latin (French?) songs, and a "drama" track with the legend of 2 maidens (in Japanese) over music. I like it alot, but I'm still waiting for a disk with the DA DA DA song.
