Actually, many of the 'women' I know, don't. But it's true, many of the younger fanbase do see it that way. And they equate gay with yaoi. Rolling Eyes

I guess sometimes it's just baka-demic.

Well then, I guess we should tell those male homosexual readers coming from an American comics background, who are actually approaching yaoi with a positive outlook, that they're in the wrong genre and to kindly step away from the boy's-love. Because yaoi CERTAINLY doesn't want a diversified fanbase. Rolling Eyes

From my blog post, please don't hurt me.

From the "That isn't right." deparment, Yaoi paddles. Being the hit it was last summer, it got upgraded. Crafted in a pine wood like surface giving a more aerodynamic shape for grip and execution. Comes in a beautiful smooth lacquer finished dipped in only the finest Yaoi... I'll leave this part out. This new version is crafted in a much more durable than it's predecessor and will not break, splinter and chip as easily... okay. Smack'em with Yaoi love! There is one reason why I didn't make a whole topic about this being "The Lowest Point." Rabied Yaoi fans and the hate they bring. Yaoi fans are a powerful sort and I dare not upset their way of fandom and power they have over people. Belive me, I have atleast 20 e-mails that say to stop bashing that type of style. Furry hate mail beats 2 to 1, but they don't scare me. Remember, safty first. Wear gloves.

Notice I didn't say gay or stupid. They really do scare me, and I've been to heck.

It's true that a lot of boy's love series don't make any mention of sexuality, but there are some that do. In Gravitation (the manga version), for example, when the main character Shuuichi is accused of being gay, he denies it at first by saying that he's just fell in love with a guy and it's got nothing to do with his sexuality, but he eventually seems to accept that he IS gay and even admits to it (though he still goes back and forth for awhile). So it's not right to say that any "true" BL never makes mention of being gay.

It IS true that boy's love is different from gay entertainment aimed at homosexuals in America since it is mainly made for women, but even gay fantasy is still gay in some way. It may not be a realistic representation, but to say it's not actually gay because of that is really getting too technical because, as another poster said, it's still two guys having sex, and most people are going to say that's gay, no matter what the story or circumstances surrounding it. Yeah, I know it's the right of every otaku to go around and say, "well, technically this isn't true because...", but I guess some things just seem a bit too nitpicky to me.

Oy. No one is saying that. Smile But I see many gay fans of 'comics' at cons look at yaoi 'manga' and wonder WTF? There is gay manga and there is BL[boys love] manga. Gay manga is not yaoi and I know many gay manga-ka like Gengoroh Tagame would be insulted if you called his works 'yaoi'. And I don't consider myself an overzealous otaku for noticing the difference because I read both, yet I am unfortable with the trend in the West that calls all men on men manga from Japan 'yaoi.'

As for crossover, there are efforts being made even in Japan at introducing Japanese women to 'gay manga' made for the 'BL' market. The Kinniku Otoko anthologies are a perfect example.
