First off, this was given to me unofficially, but I needed to share it with all of you.
After years of writing nagging e-mails, and countless questions at numerous anime conventions regarding a possible release of Aim for the Top! Gunbuster on DVD, I finally received a straight answer from someone regarding this very subject. And it didn't come from someone at Manga Entertainment, but from Anchor Bay Entertainment, the company who merged with Manga and acquired every anime license they hold. In short, Shayna MacLeod of ABE, informed me that "Anchor Bay purchased the existing Manga catalog, which did not/does not include the title you mentioned." While she goes on to say that she agrees with me that the license probably expired before the merger, she is adamant in her assertion that Gunbuster has never been in their product catalogue. With this being the case, why has Manga been telling fans of Gunbuster that they will be releasing a DVD version when their parent company Anchor Bay is stating they have no record of even holding the license? And Manga's titles were purchased well over a year ago by Anchor Bay in a moderately publicized news article. So, it seems Manga Entertainment either lost the license or did not bother to renew it before Anchor Bay took over, which also means Keith Burgess has some explaining to do. So, who has the license now? And if a R1 DVD set is going to made possible by another company such as AnimEigo, Bandai, or god forbid ADV Films, will they take the time to retranslate it and add the numerous extras that were included with the remastered set which came out in October of last year? Hopefully they will, as Gunbuster is still as popular now as it was when it first came out. I can attest to that with the amount of e-mail I get through my website. I do know Media Blasters does not have the license, as one of their representatives, John Sirabella, has stated in the past, so it will be kind of a surprise to see who does have it. And the release may be held off until Aim for the Top 2! DieBuster has run its course. Only time will tell. |

Last year, when I asked manga about Gunbuster, they said that they had no plans on releasing it on DVD. Now this was before they merged with Anchor Bay.
Manga acquired US Rendition's titles when they went out of business. But for some reason, Manga didn't touch Gunbuster for DVD release, and I assume they lost it quite a while ago, probably more than a few years ago. I've been pushing somewhat to put (license expired) next to Manga Entertainment on the encyclopedia page for Gunbuster. Titles which Manga acquired from US Renditions Appleseed (OAV) Dangaioh (OAV) Gunbuster (OAV) Guyver (OAV) Macross II (OAV) Other titles acquired by Manga Giant Robo (OAV) (Media Blasters now has this) Titles that weren't acquired by Manga Iczer-One (OAV) (Manga never acquired this, Media Blasters (AnimeWorks) has this) Super Dimensional Century Orguss (TV) (nobody has this one) |

Titles Not Acquired by Manga Ambassador Magma The Guyver: Out of Control Raven Tengu Kabuto These three titles ended up in licensing limbo after L.A. Hero merged with Manga Entertainment. BTW, Giant Robo was also a U.S. Renditions title before Manga Entertainment acquired it. |

Why do you weep with joy? It would be better if Gunbuster was licensed so that we can get a respectable release from someone.
FUNimation had recently stated they want to pick up older series that did not have a proper treatment when they were originally released, as they did with the Slayers TV series when CPM's license expired. This would give them a good chance to pick this up now. |

Probably because manga doesn't exactly have a reputation for producing respectable releases

What about the Evangelion movies, and the Ghost in the Shell movie? What about the TV series? |

Eva movies had a lot of problems. From inability to switch language and subtitles on many players to some discs being unplayable. GitS TV is actually released by Bandai (manga is only responsbile for marketing), but they had their share of problems as well - missing audio channels on DTS track, mix-ups between DTS/regular editions etc. This isn't to say that Manga never had a good DVD release (GitS movie used to be a reference quality disc back in the days). But overall they have very poor reputation. |

There's also the fact that they've just been sitting on the license all this time, and now that it's certain that they no longer have it, there's the chance of someone else picking it up now. I'm wondering if Media Blasters will, since they picked up Giant Robo and Iczer-1, or maybe even FUNimation, as they've expressed interest in reviving older titles.
