Could you be more specific? There are tons of good manga out there, and many of them contain action / advanture elements. For starters, you can see ANN's list of best (and worst) rated manga.

Although I've personally only read the first volume so far, I think that Nausicaa of the Valley of teh Wind fits the action and adventure themes perfectly. It's also 4th on the ANN's list of best rated manga, and I assume that's for a reason Smile.

But a little more information would be helpfull. For instance, there is a big difference in style between the action in dragon ball and in the average samurai manga. Maybe you have some other reading or anime watching experiences that can help you refine your question.

Anything generally from the shonen demographic would suit your tastes, it sounds like. Here's a link to some Shonen Jump titles from Viz. But yes, some specifics would help us to suggest good titles for you. Smile

His other post said he like these anime: Kenshin, Inuysaha, Ghost in the Shell.

My only suggestion for a newbie manga reader is to pick up One Piece or Naruto. Good funs series with a nice blend of action and aventure. Eventaully, your taste will mature into something like Nauisicaa, Pheonix or Buddha.

For the girlier (read: shoujo) side of action/adventure, I reccomend X, Rayearth, RG Veda, and Plannet Ladder.

Or in more common cases, stay at a maturity and intellectual level that doesn't go beyond those sorts of manga.

Not nessisarily. True that things like Inuyasha and Kenshin are aimed towards a younger crowd, but I know adults who almost exclusivly read shonen. Besides, Buddha and Phoenix both have narrative structures that are fairly simple and easy to read, so much so that almost anyone could pick it up. And while both of those stories have fairly deep underlying themes, they are essentially adventure tales. Nausicaa I would recommend to older readers, as the story and storytelling (not to mention themes and philosophys) is complex.

Wait, doesn't go beyond what sort of manga, Nausicaa or Naruto? Sorry, I'm a bit lost. Anyway I don't think it really matters about the intellectual aspect. If a manga-ka is skilled, they should be able to create an intellegent manga that's just as fun to read as anything. That's why I think things like Buddha can appeal to virtually anybody. By the same token, "big dumb fun" things can be just as great. It's all a matter of finding what appeals to you.
Anyways, if Kenshin and Inuyasha are some of you're favorite shows, try the manga versions, along with Ranma 1/2 and probobly Naruto. I don't like it, but Peacemaker Kurogane is fairly similar to Kenshin and most people around here seem to love it, so that might be worth a look. The GitS manga is a bit diffrent than the anime, and Shirow's storytelling isn't exacally easy to pick up. Appleseed is not only supirior in virtually every aspect, but it's also much easier for new readers to pick up.

Pehaps you misunderstood me and we're agreeing on the same thing. I'm just saying a lot of shonen title play it safe. One Piece and Naruto are good clean fun. It's almost something everyone can enjoy, that's why it's a good starter. One Piece and Naruto are good example of action and adventure manga that doesn't become too convoluted. The light hearted humor really help the the overall enjoyment. You can pretty much understand the underlying meaning, therefore it's accessible for all-ages. I never said that these are dumb manga aim towards kids only Wink

Plus these are the first 2 manga that got me into manga, so I still think they're great. Stuff like Phoenix, Planetes, Short Cuts, Dead End, Nambul or Buddha probably wouldn't interested back then because they seem too serious and I was unfamilar with manga at that time. But the more you read, the more you find that you need to find other titles that arn't going to play it safe all the time.

Perhaps I should have said "expand" instead of "mature". But either way, for most people who enjoy those simple type of anime, they just prefer something fun and easy first. Eventaully they want to "expand" into many different areas of manga with the different style and different storytelling that would odd at first. Even for a young children title like buddha.
