I've read up to two volumes and I already like the characters presented so far (that were IN the anime - there are a few that never were) quite a bit more. In the anime, I cared more about the supporting cast (Cougar, the watermelon guy, Kirishima, etc.) than I did for Kazuma, Ryuhow, or Kiryu - here, I actually find them to be pretty likeable. The overall art style is much more interesting here, it's noticeably influenced by Jojo's Bizarre Adventure*, although with a little less of a Western feel to it. It's bursting with energy and creativity. The story, aside from the bare basics and that one part with the guy with the gun Alter, is very different from the anime. I can't say conclusively which does it better as I'm only on volume two, but so far, the main characters are a step up from what they were in the show.

I'm kind of iffy on Alter fights, which are mostly just "MY ALTER IS STRONG!" "MY ALTER IS STRONGER!" "MY ALTER IS STRONGEST!" "OH SHI-*BOOM*" so far, but Ryuhou and Kazuma are actually on par here, which is nice. I always felt that Kazuma came off as much too weak in the anime despite his apparent reputation, as Ryuhou makes a jobber out of him in about a second in the first episode.

The battle between Asuka's "balls" and Akira's "stick" has some of the great dialogue ever, by the way.

*HAY GUESS WHERE THE IDEA FOR ALTERS CAME FROM

I'm pretty sure that there are only 5 volumes, though I could be wrong. But with the way vol. 5 ended, I'd say it's finished.

I have all 5 volumes sitting on my shelf that I haven't read until yesterday. I was still watching the anime at that time so I didn't want to read the manga yet. Anyways, I did read the up to volume 2 just to do a quick comparison. Might contain a little bit of spoiler if you haven't seen the anime.

1. The art isn't like the anime. While the anime's art is neater and clean, the manga seem more edgy, especially when Kazuma is using his alter, it's like his super saiyan form. I like the artwork in the manga more; Yosuke Kuroda gives the character that "flair" when they're in heat of the action.

1. The manga get straight to the point, unlike the anime the manga doesn't give much time to supporting character like Cougar, Kirishima and the other female cast member. Instead it focus on mainly on Kazuma while Ryuhou and the Lawless gang. Actually I don't remember the lawless gang ever being in the anime, but they're good addition to the story. The overall story between the struggle of the Native and mainline is the same, but the storyline is actually different, different enemies he faces in different situation. Unlike in the anime in which the good guy and bad guy were a blur at the start, the manga portray Holy's empire as a corrupted special force team. You can sense who's the good guy and who's the bad guy and who's confused.

3. The action is pretty good, good dialog exchanges such as “you can stuff your absolute justice up your ass" and "I have 2 balls for you to swallow". The action in the anime might be better because of the motion of the fight, but the manga got some pretty hard hitting panel. Kazuma's high energy combine with the frantic art style really bring out the power struggle and tension. Kazuma is definitely more of a bad azz in the manga. Scryed is more fanservecy but it really doesn't get in the way of the story at all (it actually help it imo). And hey, the comedy was pretty funny, check out page 71-73 from volume 2, ridiculously funny.

I'm starting to like the manga more than the anime. I have to read more of the manga to make a conclusion, but with only 5 volumes it doesn't leave a lot of room to explore the sub character or subplots, so it won't have the epic feel that the anime had or the emotional attachment to the sub character. Instead it's short and get to the point, and the new enemies Kazuma has to face were pretty good. If you like the anime, you might like the manga more. If you absolutely love the anime, than you might not like the manga.

And comparing to other shonen manga titles, Scryed beat the hell out of most shonen title like Flame of Recca, Bleach and Shaman King which lacks the "attidude" and stay kiddy friendly.

Wow good explaination, just like most of your post, it contain one sentence that's less informative and no help at all. And hey I can't blame a guy who run his own little anime-club and actually think Burst Angel and DearS is ....good Rolling Eyes.

I read the first volume and can't say I was impressed at all. I found the art to be particularly uninteresting. A lot of the panels were small and crowded, making it hard to tell what was going on in the story, especially during the action scenes (which were almost incomprehensible).

I had decided to check out Scryed after I'd heard really great things about the anime. From what I hear, the anime is generally considered to be better than the manga.
