Hi everyone. My apologies if this seems spammy, but I need help. ^^;;
I'm doing some research for a class, and I need people to answer this small questionnaire for me. It's for a survey which has to be discussed soon, so if you could fill it out I'd appreciate it. You just need to fill out these requirements: 1: You must be an anime fan; 2: You must know a large amount of Japanese. The reason is that I want to obtain the opinion of those that know the language and know the real reason behind all those changes in script, video editing, and such. You know? Not just a "This show sucks because they edited the theme song!" kinda reason, but a "Well they had to edit the song because they didn't think a song that spoke of blood and smoking would be good for the target demographic" reason. Based more on facts. Ya know? Anyway, here's the questions. Thanks! ----- 1 – Age: 2 – Gender: 3 – Marital status: 4 – Spoken languages: 5 – Job: A) Student B) General labor (Wal-Mart, McDonalds, stores, etc.) C) Office work 6 – Education: a) Grade school b) Middle school c) Highschool d) College 7 - For how long have you seen Japanese animation? a) Less than a year b) 1 to 5 years c) More than five years 8 - What genres do you like to see? a) Mecha b) Shoujo c) Historical d) Romance e) Fighting f) Fantasy g) Children's Animation h) Comedy / Slapstick i) Other 9 - What's your favorite anime series? (Feel free to reply with whatever series you like, regardless of obscurity and such.) 10 - Do you buy merchandise of your favorite shows? a) Yes b) No 10ª - If you do, what do you like to buy? (Mention all those that apply.) a) Figures / Models b) Music c) Magazines d) Books (Manga or novels) e) Shirts f) Software (games, screensavers, etc.) 11 - Have you ever bought any DVDs or tapes of your favorite shows? a) Yes b) No 11ª - If you regularly buy anime, how much money do you spend a month on it? 12 – Do you prefer to watch subtitled, dubbed, fansubbed or raw anime? a) Subbed b) Dubbed c) Fansubbed d) Raw 13 – Do you buy legit or bootleg DVDs? a) Legit b) Bootleg c) Both d) I'd rather not respond 14 – Do you see anime on TV or cable? a) Yes b) No 15 – What do you think about dubbing quality in general? a) Great! b) Good c) Regular d) Bad e) Horrible 16 – In your opinion, on what does translation quality depend on? a) The dubbing company b) The actors c) The original story d) The script writers 17 – Do you think that censorship has any influence on the quality of the show? a) Yes b) No 18 - What is your opinion on edited anime shows? ------ Again, thank you! |

Why do you need to know a large ammount of Japanese for this? Infact, many of these questions do not actually lead to your original point. Be honest or more specific, please.
The real reason behind the editing and re-branding of shows is either due to the wishes of the Japanese creators, or the US companies desicion to make a title more appropriate for it's english-speaking age demographic (and network standards). |

Well I am a BIG anime fan, I know some Japanese not that much though... but I’ll fill out your survey any way!
1 – Age: 17 2 – Gender: Male 3 – Marital status: Single 4 – Spoken languages: English! 5 – Job: A) Student 6 – Education: c) Highschool 7 - For how long have you seen Japanese animation? c) More than five years 8 - What genres do you like to see? d) Romance f) Fantasy h) Comedy / Slapstick i) Other 9 - What's your favorite anime series? (Feel free to reply with whatever series you like, regardless of obscurity and such.) Cowboy Bebop, Hibane Ramnei, Saikano (my top 3) 10 - Do you buy merchandise of your favorite shows? a) Yes 10ª - If you do, what do you like to buy? (Mention all those that apply.) b) Music d) Books (Manga or novels) 11 - Have you ever bought any DVDs or tapes of your favorite shows? a) Yes 11ª - If you regularly buy anime, how much money do you spend a month on it? 60$ or more.... 12 – Do you prefer to watch subtitled, dubbed, fansubbed or raw anime? a) Subbed 13 – Do you buy legit or bootleg DVDs? d) I'd rather not respond 14 – Do you see anime on TV or cable? a) Yes 15 – What do you think about dubbing quality in general? c) Regular 16 – In your opinion, on what does translation quality depend on? d) The script writers 17 – Do you think that censorship has any influence on the quality of the show? a) Yes 18 - What is your opinion on edited anime shows? Well sometimes when a series gets dubbed and reformatted it losses the original meaning of the series. Anime is written in Japanese and has the logic of that culture. For example Japanese humor is quite different than American so when it gets translated it over it seems awkward and cheesy at times. The whole point of it though is when they edit it they edit it to fit our culture, not the culture it was originally intended for. I'm sure other people could give you better answers than me but that what I think! |

Trigun or I,my,me Strawberry Eggs 10- Do you buy merchandise of your favorite shows? Yes 10A- If you do, what do you like to buy? All 11A- If you regularly buy anime, how much money do you spend a month on it? $50-$100 12- Do you prefer to watch subtitled, dubbed, fansubbed or raw anime? All 13- Do you buy legit or bootleg DVDs? Legit, always legit. 14- Do you see anime on TV or cable? Yes 15- What do you think about dubbing quality in general? Good 16- In your opinion, on what does translation quality depend on? c) The original story 17- Do you think that censorship has any influence on the quality of the show? N0 18- What is your opinion on edited anime shows? Somtimes the redone version is not as good as the original. But in some occasion it makes it better. There are also differnet types of "edited anime shows". First there's the kind that have the spoken words changed so that what the charecters say can fit. Then theirs music editing, where they dump the original song and bring out somthing new. And the last one i can think of is the one where they redo the whole thing. And the authors original plot is lost or altered all together. Well if thats it then i'm outa here! Hope you get a passing grade. |

Why not? 11ª.- If you regularly buy anime, how much money do you spend a month on it? Maybe 25 € (32'5 US $) per month. 12.- Do you prefer to watch subtitled, dubbed, fansubbed or raw anime? Subtiled 13.- Do you buy legit or bootleg DVDs? Legit DVD's. 14.- Do you see anime on TV or cable? Yes (not too much, thought). 15.- What do you think about dubbing quality in general? Good. 16.- In your opinion, on what does translation quality depend on? The dubbing company. 17.- Do you think that censorship has any influence on the quality of the show? Not really, unless it is a very bloody show. 18.- What is your opinion on edited anime shows? Depending of where will they be seen. A lot of people watches national TV channels, and some parents tend to think that everything that is aired there (specially in kid's time) shouldn't contain images that may hurt them. And I agree with this state. However, I would take it as an offense if I buy a censored DVD. A serious one. |

I'm a sucker for these survey things.
1 – Age: 22.....1/2 2 – Gender: Chick 3 – Marital status: Got a man 4 – Spoken languages: English and Spanish 5) Student 6) College 7) More than five years 8 b) Shoujo f) Fantasy g) Anime on acid. But if you want a better term, "progressive." Example: Serial Experiments Lain 9 - What's your favorite anime series? Rose of Versailles all the way. 10 - Do you buy merchandise of your favorite shows? b) No 11 - Have you ever bought any DVDs or tapes of your favorite shows? a) Yes 11ª - If you regularly buy anime, how much money do you spend a month on it? About $50 a month. 12 – Do you prefer to watch subtitled, dubbed, fansubbed or raw anime? a) Subbed 13 – Do you buy legit or bootleg DVDs? a) Legit. And yes, I'm telling the truth. 14 – Do you see anime on TV or cable? a) Yes, but the only anime I'm watching is Fullmetal Alchemist on Adult Swim (although I've seen it already and collecting the DVDs). 15 – What do you think about dubbing quality in general? c) Regular. Dubbing quality has definitely improved over the years. Dubbing 16 – In your opinion, on what does translation quality depend on? a) The dubbing company b) The actors c) The original story d) The script writers All of the above, but it mainly depends on the script writers. 17 – Do you think that censorship has any influence on the quality of the show? a) Yes 18 - What is your opinion on edited anime shows? It depends on the amount of edits and the content edited. Want an example? Cardcaptor Sakura aired a while back and it was edited to pieces. It was a marketing ploy. The company felt that the anime wouldn't do well if girls were the target audience; hence, they changed the story around to make one of the male supporting characters the main character. This, of course, changed the story dramatically. Characters names and dialogue were changed. The original personalities (Sakura and her brother especially) were ruined, and of course, all the shoujo elements and shounen-ai implications were done away with. As a result, the anime failed miserably. A more recent example would be One Piece, shown heavily edited on Fox Kids. They took a shown aimed at teenage boys and edited it for a much younger male audience. They even changed the original theme song (to a "rap"), and no, there is nothing objectionable about being on a cruise. The reason the theme song was changed was so it can 1) Be sung in English. Let's face it, kids don't like to read...let alone in another language. 2) Fox Kids have the deplorable idea that the "rap" "song" is cool (Captain Planet, anyone?) and will somehow appeal to kids. As far as I know, though, everything on Adult Swim runs pretty much unedited. If it is edited, then the edits are minor. Nowadays I could care less if an anime is edited on television or no. I buy the DVDs and they contain the unedited content. ....erroneous information on Funimation be damned. ....Steven has a point. You don't need to speak a lick of Japanese to answer this survey. You should have just said "being able to explain your opinion on editing is a must." In that way, you can avoid answers like the one in the post above mine. |

Allright. I did not want opinions made by people who think that a show sucks because a name, or a graphic, or anything, was changed for what they would consider a trivial reason. I requested a large knowledge of Japanese because I believed that, by knowing the source language, the person that I asked the questions to would have a better understanding of why things are changed from one version to another. I study English-Spanish translation at Universidad Autonoma de Baja California, in Mexico. I originally wished to give this to translators, but I realized that there aren't many (in my school) who like anime. This is because many of my peers are not young people, but adults over 35 years of age, often with children of their own, who aren't interested in cartoons of any kind. So I thought I'd change my target demographic and shoot for general anime fans. I apologize if I did not seem to be taking this serriously. I just asked for help, and I definitely did not want to start a fight, or look trollish. But yes, everyone who has expressed their opinions regarding the Japanese language and its usefulness in this particular survey is correct. I once again apologize for this. And thank you all for answering! Please, I need at least twenty people and I know there's many anime fans here. ^^ |

1 – Age: 21
2 – Gender: Male 3 – Marital status: Single 4 – Spoken languages: English, Lao (a little bit) 5 – Job: A) Student 6 – Education: d) College 7 - For how long have you seen Japanese animation? c) More than five years 8 - What genres do you like to see? All of them. 9 - What's your favorite anime series? (Feel free to reply with whatever series you like, regardless of obscurity and such.) Rurouni Kenshin, episodes 1-62, the movie, and the Tsuioku-hen OAV. 10 - Do you buy merchandise of your favorite shows? a) Yes 10ª - If you do, what do you like to buy? (Mention all those that apply.) a) Figures / Models b) Music 11 - Have you ever bought any DVDs or tapes of your favorite shows? a) Yes 11ª - If you regularly buy anime, how much money do you spend a month on it? $40-$60 12 – Do you prefer to watch subtitled, dubbed, fansubbed or raw anime? a) Subbed 13 – Do you buy legit or bootleg DVDs? a) Legit 14 – Do you see anime on TV or cable? a) Yes 15 – What do you think about dubbing quality in general? c) Regular. A few good ones, a few bad ones, and a lot in between (unless you're ADV, then they're ALL horrible ) 16 – In your opinion, on what does translation quality depend on? a) The dubbing company. Seeing as how they control the actors and script writers, I feel the result of a U.S. adapatation is all on their shoulders. 17 – Do you think that censorship has any influence on the quality of the show? a) Yes. Some companies that dub anime like to change the script or make edits to certain aspects because they want to cater to "what they feel American audiences will like." 18 - What is your opinion on edited anime shows? If you mean the shows that air on weekday afternoons and are edited by 4Kids, then I don't really care. Most of the titles they have do not interest me and are meant "for kids" to a pretty high degree. Shows I might like that air on Cartoon Network, however, I do not like being edited. For example, Rurouni Kenshin had some major edits, and while I do not like the dubbing, they could've at least did a little less editing. I mean, who smokes a toothpick? However, maybe if the person who watches it gets intersted enough, they might go out and even buy the DVD and end up liking it even more because of better video quality, and maybe audio since not all dubs are created equal. EDIT: I changed the amount of money I spend on anime. I just realized that I barely get $60 a month . Last edited by Tony K. on Thu Apr 14, 2005 9:57 pm; edited 1 time in total |

1.) 17.
2.) Male. 3.) Nigh-isolated. 4.) English, enough Spanish to survive. 5.) Currently a student, have worked as a scientific programmer on the SAGE III project over the past summer. 6.) High school (though I know a great deal of what's taught in upper-class meteorology courses.). 7.) 6 years. 8.) Mecha, Shounen, Shoujo, Parody, Horror, Historical, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and most of the genres of "popular" anime. 9.) Can't choose a favorite, so I'll list some favorites: Eva, Berserk, Fullmetal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic, Ghost in the Shell (canon of works), Hellsing, Boogiepop Phantom, X/1999. 10.) yes, "a," "b," "e." 11.) yes, ~$40. 12.) Subbed. 13.) Always legit (with purpose; I've been inadvertantly tricked before). 14.) Yes 15.) Good, getting better overall, I think. 16.) Translators' attempt to capture the overall idea of what is being said in the original. 17.) Yes. 18.) Editing is a necessary evil. I'd like to see as little editing as possible done to anime, but I recognize that it will (and sometimes must) take place. Edits can get a little ridiculous sometimes, but as long as the opportunity to purchase uncut DVDs exists, I won't mind too much. |

I'm not sure whether I "qualify" for this survey, but being a bit of a brat, I'm filling it out anyhow. I consider myself more of a manga fan than an anime fan, but I do enjoy anime considerably. Also, while I'd love to say that I speak Japanese, unfortunately I've only studied it independently for about a year (as it isn't offered in any local schools), so I'm no where near to being fluent in it. I'm eager to attend college so that I may formally study Japanese, but until then I'm more or less limited to books, audiotapes, and computer programs on the matter, which hardly suffice. Anyhow...
1 – Age: 16 2 – Gender: Female 3 – Marital status: Single 4 – Spoken languages: English, Latin, and French. (Well, perhaps I shouldn't include Latin, as I don't really speak it, per se. I must say, though, that I'm quite bitchin' at reciting Latin verse.) 5 – Job: A) Student (and part-time lifegaurd) 6 – Education: c) Highschool (as well as some summer courses at the local college) 7 - For how long have you seen Japanese animation? c) More than five years 8 - What genres do you like to see? b) Shoujo c) Historical f) Fantasy h) Comedy (I'm not a fan of slapstick, though) 9 - What's your favorite anime series? (Feel free to reply with whatever series you like, regardless of obscurity and such.) Gakuen Alice and The Rose of Versailles 10 - Do you buy merchandise of your favorite shows? a) Yes 10ª - If you do, what do you like to buy? (Mention all those that apply.) b) Music c) Magazines d) Books (Manga or novels) 11 - Have you ever bought any DVDs or tapes of your favorite shows? a) Yes 11ª - If you regularly buy anime, how much money do you spend a month on it? Hmm... about 25 dollars (I spend much more on manga, though). 12 – Do you prefer to watch subtitled, dubbed, fansubbed or raw anime? a) Subbed 13 – Do you buy legit or bootleg DVDs? a) Legit 14 – Do you see anime on TV or cable? a) Yes 15 – What do you think about dubbing quality in general? c) Regular (I find that dubbing quality greatly varies. Some are wonderful, while others make my ears bleed) 16 – In your opinion, on what does translation quality depend on? a) The dubbing company (I think there are many factors that attribute to a dub's quality, so "all of the above" would probably be the best answer. However, as Tony said, the companies are in charge of choosing the script writers, actors, et cetera so in essence the quality is most dependant on them.) 17 – Do you think that censorship has any influence on the quality of the show? a) Yes 18 - What is your opinion on edited anime shows? Well, it depends somewhat on the definition of "editing." When it comes down to it, all anime shows that are subbed/dubbed are edited to some extent, and this is not necessarily a bad thing. When scenes are cesored, dialogue is edited, or other things are done of that nature, then it can indeed affect the show. Still, oftentimes the quality of the anime isn't all too greatly affected, and admittedly, editing is more or less inevitable. I do, though, prefer to see anime as close to the original as possible, as excessive editing often compromises the creator's vision. Hope that helps! |
