What I believe what happened to Anime's popularity, was that the medium fans, people close enough to Otaku to have been watching before Poke'mon and DBZ, but never truly, fanatically involved, (Myself Included), where instantly turned off by the insane pandemoniums that followed suit of Poke'mon and Yu Gi NO.

Another thing I believe is that us middle fans are the long unaccounted for fans, with it always being the Otaku and the n00bs. They both acted the same, and I always felt "a bit to popular" to be at a con, suddenly starting around 1997 and into late 03. Don't get me wrong, I still went, but resented all the people there.

I dropped out of anime in general for these years, appalled by the hideous audience. Call me a scene kid, but I have an itching Idea I'm not the only one.

I am slowly starting to jump back in, and catching up on the stuff I missed, but all the new fans really killed it for me, and I'm sure lots of other people who were into it too.

Despite what people WANT to say, some people REALLY don't want to accept new fans, and shouldn't have to.

I'm ranting like a drunk now, so I'll stop. I think I got it all out.

To answer the call for legit online shops, Deep Discount DVD and Digital Eyes day in and day out are probably the cheapest places to order anime DVDs online. They also have free shipping offers. Overstock.com can be cheaper sometimes, but you can't preorder anything from there. If you're a patient shopper, Right Stuf holds company sales (ADV, Geneon, etc.), which combined with their Got Anime? savings club you can get bundles of DVDs cheap. Right Stuf is also about the last place you'll find new VHS anime too.

For manga, Overstock is the cheapest place I found online with up to 35% off for items, but their search is terrible and the manga listings aren't always accurate, so it can be a pain to find things on there. Buy DVD has mangas 25% off always, and has a wide selection that is easy to navigate. Plus free shipping on orders over $100. You can preorder there, but if you order already released items with a preorder they will always hold until all items are released.

Anime soundtracks can usually be found at any of your favorite popular e-tailers, but from what I've seen Deep Discount CD has them the cheapest at about $9.99. Sometimes their database will put anime sountracks on their DVD site instead, so if you can't find what you want check there.

For random japanese stuff, I guess there's no beating J-List. From pocky to school girl uniforms to Japanese magazines, they got it all, and what they don't have they can special order for you. Their specialty is adult material though, so be wary of that.

On the japanese side, with AmoTokyo biting the dust last year, there's only the big three left: CD Japan, Yes Asia, and for the experienced shopper, Amazon Japan. CDJ has everything you need; R2 Japanese DVDs, CDs, calendars, and a few other random goodies. Yes Asia has all this stuff too, but they cater to more the R3 market, where you can get R2 quality materials for quite a bit less if you're lucky. Their Japanese products are marked up much like american sites do for imported goods, so it would be best to stick with CDJ if you plan on buying Japanese goods. However, you'll get the most for your money at Amazon Japan. The shopping area of the site is entirely in japanese, but if you can copy and paste the info from CDJ/Neowing (CDJ's Japanese site) you can find pretty much anything you want. CDJ charges what some call "gaijin tax" so prices are a bit higher there than Amazon Japan. Signing up and checking out are all done in english should you select the option, so handling the money is the easy part there. Of these three, only CDJ will export adult material, and they carry very little of it.

While I think games are a bit out of the spectrum of the site, since you asked I'll throw some sites out there too. Stateside games are easy to purchase and there are no special sites with deals, so I'll just focus on the imports. It's really just two sites worth bringing up: Lik-Sang and Play Asia. Whichever is the cheaper site depends on the day, but Play-Asia is overall the more reliable site when it comes to shipping. For very hard to find games or japanese adult bishoujo games there's Himeya, but their products are very expensive.

Quite a bit of typing I did. Surprised

I too came back to name drop J-List.com

But, like the guy above said, A good majority of it is porn, so if you are just looking for random stuff, make sure you click the bottom button on the title page.

At the risk of agitating my fellow IY fans, couldn't have done better myself. I actually had a spit take LMAO! Thanks for the MUCH needed chuckle (now if I can just get that mental picture outta my head...) Shocked And, if anyone cares, I offer this for your on-line resource survey.

Favorite DVD Vendor US- TRSI
The price is right, especially with their "GOT ANIME" club discount. Frequent sales on various companies and titles. TRSI has also been known to ship releases before they officially "street", so customers can and do, receive their merchandise early! They also have a very nice customer service group.

Favorite DVD Vendor Nihon - Amazon.jp
It takes a bit of navigating, but worth the effort. No deals, though, except for the normal sales. But, if you want your anime unmolested by NA companies and don't mind the language barrier ...

Favorite Manga Site - Amazon.com & Amazon.jp - They get the job done quickly, provide dependable pre-orders, and overseas shipments cost a foot & toe instead of arm and leg!

Music - CD Japan. All the hits, all the time. They have a endless flow of current J-Pop featured in a very user-friendly website. Dependable pre-orders, timely shipping and a buyer's club with points discount (similar to Media Play) Yes, Asia ain't bad either, but it's a bit slower to ship and their site drives me nuts to search, even in English! (Both charge hefty shipping fees, so you'd better want your tunes a LOT!)

Hope this helps!

I found it interesting that the person that mentioned manga to anime conversions with missing nudity used Negima and Love Hina as examples. As far as Love Hina goes, I don't really think they cut out any nudity, it just might seem that way since the manga is so much longer. And some screencaps I've seen of the Negima anime make it look much more risque then the manga. I also fail to see how Inu Yasha could possibly get worse as far as story and character development go. At least the tits in the manga make it mildly entertaining, unlike the anime which I don't find the least bit entertaining.

EDIT: As far as stores go, I usually use Amazon Japan, because of their 20% off on preorders, but I've been considering switching to Anime Jungle, because while they have no discount, they list their exchange rate as $1=117 Yen, compared to most places $1=103 Yen. Which is much more then 20% off.

Re: Right Stuf.

Right Stuf is an excellent online dealer - they know anime, and know what they'r edoing, generally.

That said, they do have some problems.

1) many of their DVDs are cheaper elsewhere, unless they are on sale.
2) they have poor relations with some distributors, Dark horse specifically. I preordered Berserk Volume 6 in October. I was released mid January, it shipped Mid february. This has consistently happened with my berserk manga
2.5) This is the only time I've heard of something like this, but I ordered the escaflowne boxed set, but after 4 months they cancelled the order, explaining they we wrongly informed by their distributor that a handful existed when they never did.

I think what's happening now is simply that the domestic licensors overestimated the size of the potential audience for anime in North America and licensed more titles than the domestic market was able to bear, and now you're getting the inevitable "correction" as the domestic companies scale themselves back down to actual demand.

Jerry Chu himself has acknowledged declining profits in the industry.

I just want to say one thing.

Trigun - Not the closest to a Western-based anime. The closest?

ahem......

Leiji Matsumoto's GUN FRONTIER

Online Anime, I try for Used DVD Shops, as they can be much cheaper (and much more reliable than eBay) plus I can apply better credit than Gamestop (Unless i'm gunning for Video Games) or r/l shops. One I go to is SecondSpin.com Depending on what they get, sometimes I can find some goodies for much less. Plus maybe find OP stuff as well once in a while.

If your daughter is of an age where nudity and pounds upon pounds of blood is acceptable, Berserk and Hellsing (both anime and manga) are two titles I’m always telling new anime fans to see.

I really don't see the connection between Wolf's Rain and Angel Sanctuary in this one. Further Explanation?

The two places that I usually shop from when I buy anime online are:

www.animecornerstore.com
Their prices are pretty good and they carry some imported stuff as well as all the domestic releases. Lots of stuff to choose from. They offer free shipping on orders of $100 or more. Orders usually arrive fairly quickly. They are easy and friendly to work with.

and

www.rightstuf.com
Pretty good prices as well and a great selection of other merchandise too. Free shipping on orders of $100 or more. They also offer weekly specials and coupons you can use for some really good discounts. Every time I've ordered from them, my items have arrived on the exact day they said they would.

Hope this helps. Anime smile

One can always tell where the educational system has failed by some of the postings I've seen at some forums. I've been accused of being a "spelling-nazi" when I tried to raise the standard. I pity their English teachers.

In the UK I always shop round for the best price and availability. Anime has been quite sparce in recent history. Though it is now improving, it will never be as great as in the US. There are no book shops in my town that sell manga and what anime that is available in the DVD shops are usually expensive. I usually find that Amazon.co.uk will have what I want in stock at a price I am willing to pay when comparied to the rest.

Would warn away from that store. While there prices are very good on manga, and they do not themselves sell bootlegs, if you look carefully you find they are associated with a store that very much does sell bootlegs. Only discovered this after trying to make an order with them and ending up cancelling it after getting an email from that other online store about the order getting delayed. All you need to do is go into their site directory and you will see a link to another site where you'll find tons of bootlegs, more than a few of which are english dubs.

www.dvdplanet.com

surprised no one has mentioned that one...unless I'm blind.

other than that, I also use deepdiscountdvd.com, which is actually the one I order the most from, and rightstuf.com.

I'm turned off by people who don't like something because of the other people that like it, or because it got popular.
