I just finished watching Macross Zero, and have to say it's one of the best shows I've seen. The story, the characters, the art - everything about it was great. I've read about the licensing issues with the rock band from Macross 7, but are there any grumblings about Zero coming to America?
Also, I've never seen the original show. I do remember watching a few eps here and there of Robotech when I was a kid, but nothing substantial. Is the original SDF Macross worth watching for a fan of Zero? |

I still think SDF Macross is the best Macross series, better than Zero or Plus (or 7 or II, but those don't get talked up as much). But considering it was produced in 1982, and on a pretty limited budget, it might not be something for someone who found Zero's primary draw to be the animation and fight scenes. Since you talk about loving the story and characters in Zero, you'll probably like SDF Macross just fine. The characters and story are both better than in Zero...really, the only thing in it that's not as good as Zero is the animation. The original cast is still my favorite of the franchise, and I value good characters above all else, so that's why I like the show so much. If you prefer story, though, I'm going to actually suggest (despite the danger of getting lynched by Macross fans) that you check out Macross 7. SDF hints at a lot of stuff and starts to get into it, but Macross 7 is where you get most of the actual story development (some of which was touched on in Zero).
It's been so long since I even cared about the legal situation of Macross that I'm afraid I don't really remember the details anymore, so someone else will have to explain that. Based on what I do remember, I don't think any of those problems should stand in the way of Macross Zero being released in the US if a company decides to license it, but I could be extremely wrong on that. If no one else steps up to explain it, I remember that the Macross World forums have (or at least used to have) a long thread about the legal entanglements of the Macross franchise, so I'd check that out to see if it answers your question. I will mention that the issue with Macross 7 is separate from the issues affecting the franchise at large. In the case of Mac 7, the cost of licensing the Fire Bomber music is exorbitant. If I recall correctly, though, that's pretty much all there is to it. No one wants to cough up such an outrageous amount of money, so it remains unlicensed. |

Rumour/Buzz had it that ADV was gunning for it, and had a decent chance. So, they went to Big West, and Big West went "sure, but ask Harmony Gold first if they mind". So ADV did, and Harmony Gold were all cool with it/ Then, for some reason, Big West suspected something, and withdrew from negotiations.
This was reported at some con, from some person, so don't take it to heart. The license could go with anyone, considering the name Macross has behind if (and the legal complications it ensues) |

As for the licensing thing, here is the thread on the MW forums (WARNING: very long reading!!!) : http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=153 I'm very fond of Macross Zero personnally and I'd love to see an official release outside Japan. Due to the fact that Bandai is involved into the production of Mac0, HG will probably have some difficulties to make them real trouble if they (Bandai) really wish to release it in the USA, or elsewhere... All the more that there has already been Macross releases outside Japan without any mention of HG in any way (Mikimoto's Macross Seven: Trash manga, for example, has been released in France by Glénat and the name of HG appears strictly nowhere into the books...) Wait and see... As usual ![]() |
