hey, I've been trying to start an Anime club at my school with the whole ADVocates thing, but to get it passed by the administration, I need some ways of how it would be educational.
so far I've thought of:
see different other styles of animation (for people interested in going into that field)
learn about cultures other than our own

but thats only 2, so it would be greatly appreciated if anybody could help out.
thanks

- Anime is an art form which should be appreciated
- People could meet people with the same interests, possibly building lifelong friendships! (haha)
- Show people that there are more to animation than Disney or Hanna Barbara

That’s all I got you can manipulate those reasons any way you want.

Y'all might have to really work that one (I remember how some high school administrators can be)! Maybe drop some names and titles and explain cultural, philosophical, and sociological significance.

How about using the idea of whether anime is a genre or medium of entertainment? With all the U.S. cartoons and live action movies that exist in this country you could use that whole "genre/medium" topic as an excuse for discussion and at the same time have actual source material to use as research.

I would recommend focusing on anime that tries to present messages, while avoiding anime that are pure entertainment. Spirited Away would be an example of a good choice, while something like Slayers would be a bad choice. While I love both, Spirited Away has a more obvious "educational" value.

And for the love of God don't even think about using fansubs of any kind! I don't think administrators will take too kindly to the showing of illegal merchandise.

Our club also signed up for that ADV thing, but I don't remember how we went about it. We have a teacher as our sponsor, and she's probably the one who got most of it straightened out. But, it shouldn't be a big problem, unless our administration just didn't care. I think an "Anime Club" is educational just because of the fact that you have the chance to learn about Japanese culture.

Tell the school that you're going to have "profund, educational discussions on art films", give the club a vague name that sounds like you're going to watch all kinds of arty movies, and then just watch anime. That'll get the school off your back

Don't listen to this guy. An anime club can be plenty educational on its own. You'll learn about foreign cultures and if you show a few artsy films like Spirited Away and Milennium Actress you will be fine with the admins.

Here's what our anime club says officially (link is here. scroll down to "Japanese Anime"):

"To spread the knowledge of Anime and Manga to students by providing access at club meetings."

Essentially, it's educationalese for "we watch anime as a club for 4 hours every sunday on the big screen".

There's also something that FUNimation does. Um, I think it's called Operation Anime or something... But you sign up, and they send you the DVD, not just the first episode. We got Fullmetal Alchemist DVD 1 for free (to be shared amongst our club members, of course).
