I was wondering which band is more popular? I like Asian Kung Fu Generation alot, but I also like Larc-en-ciel.

I like both! But, if I had to go with one, it'd pick Asian Kung-Fu Generation.

If you're speaking about popularity, without any doubt I'd choose L'Arc-en-Ciel.

I think they're both good but I'd pick Asian Kung Fu Generation because they're more "punk." Well, not really, but they have a much better chance of achieving success in America than L'arc-en-ciel.

DIR EN GREY!

As to what's more popular in Japan, L'arc is more popular.

I like Asian Kung-fu Generation...but L'arc en ciel has the seniority and the sheer bulk of music....basically L'arc has more songs that I like. So I would have to go with L'arc. AKfG has potential, but I would have to see what else they come out with.

L'Arc-en-Ciel is more popular. I think they are both great bands though.

L'arc~en~ciel has been successful in making music for 15 years and all of the members have also been doing solo work in the last few years, while AKFG has only recently been recognized by mainstream music listened because of its singles being played as anime theme songs. It's like comparing.. say, Bon Jovi, to a relatively new rock band with 1 or 2 major record releases.

You know, I'd really like to agree with you on this, but you are forgetting something very important here. Who is better marketed to the U.S.?

Well, as far as I know, L'Arc~en~ciel has had at least 3 CD releases in the U.S. and has had a concert here as well? Can any of this be said for Asian Kung Fu Generation? The depth of the band and how great they are means nothing if they aren't marketed (true for ANY band)

Don't get me wrong. I like them both, but frankly the one who wins the popularity contest is the same one who wins the marketing contest. As it's already been stated, L'Arc has been around for awhile as it is, so they have seniority on top of it all.

I post on a "punk" website very frequently. Trust me, more people have heard of AKFG than L'arc-en-ciel. I'm sure if they released some stuff via smartpunk.com, they would definitely sell more copies.

Maybe in that niche group... but that suggests that you are looking at it from a very limited perspective.

No matter how much you'd like it to be, "punk" is still generally a niche group and is not that mainstream. Great... so a large part of the place where you post is aware of AKFG - but how does that make them an accurate sampling of the world as a whole?

I think it's safe to say that if take things a little more logically and think things through, it is safe to say that L'Arc is more popular.

haven't they been around for 12 (since 93)? And to Godaistudios, AKFG is relatively new. I dunno know long they've been together, but they're a new band. L'Arc~en~ciel is an old classic, so to speak. They've garnered thousands of fans, made numerous songs for anime, which is why the CD's were released (which doesn't count, cause they were only available online, IMO). The concert was at an anime con, don't forget, where people have actually heard of them.

You can't expect a newer band like AKFG to have done so much, can you?

Anyway, I like both bands, and have heard more L'Arc. So I like them better.

Actually, I addressed these points in my earlier posts... my contention is that L'Arc indeed is more popular for many of these reasons. I was fully aware that AKFG being new, but in my last post, I was trying to point out that using a very narrow view to suggest that AKFG is somehow more popular was being ludicrous.

Oh, I definetly like them both. Although I prefer L'arc myself, I look forward to hearing more music come down the line.

Yeah, you people don't listen. I was talking about potential success in America. Seniority means nothing when leaving your fanbase. A lot of Japanese bands have had A concert in America and they have gone NO WHERE as well. Just because because L'arc has ONE cd available in America just over the internet means nothing.

Actually they have had three CD's released in the U.S. thus far though the first one failed due to poor marketing. Two(not one) cd's are currently available through tofu records:
http://www.tofurecords.com/artists/larc.php
They were also part of the Final Fantasy: the movie soundtrack.

Right now the potential for AKFG is non-exisistant because they (the band) haven't been marketed to the U.S. yet in any way, shape, or form. Even with the release of Full Metal Alchemist and Naruto, doing one or two songs for anime really only markets the anime and not the band, otherwise we would have also gotten Porno Graffiti, and probably several others by over here by now.

In the end, the potential doesn't yet exist until somebody starts marketing them to the U.S.

There is nothing wrong with being an AKFG fan. I love the music I've heard them do so far. That doesn't mean I have to be blindly obsessed to the point that I would deny the facts and create my own reality.
