Does "Director's Cut" mean original version? Is the American version gonna be changed?

I was able to see the director's cut with subtitles at the Egyptian on Monday. It was amazing.

Huh . . . By "booked wider" do they mean indie arthouse wide, or "Hey honey, let's stop by the movies and see what's playing!" wide? I live in the suburbs (Joy!) and don't want to have to go all the way downtown to see it.
There's a theater kind of nearby that plays movies like Sideways and Life Aquatic . . . if they show it there, I'd be way more likely to go see it. |

I think they mean "wider than the subtitled version", not a true wide release, which would be box office suicide.
I'm guessing maybe 150-200 screens for the dub. |

Not "Director's Cut" but Original.
Original 126 min US version 106 min Steamboy was made to cut for wide release. Otomo supervised and cut it. Propagator of Steamboy Kuwajima Ryuichi says on Steamboy official blog "I do not want to accept it." |

Why was it cut anyways?
Oh, and Tenchi, I think you're overestimating the amount of theaters it will be in. I'll say it will be in 50 to 75 theaters nationwide. |

My logic here is simple: they spent money on getting big names for the dub, so I see it getting the same kind of distribution Disney gives to the Ghibli films (pre-Oscar), which are also dubbed with big names.

Seeing as how there aren't any Landmark theaters around me, I guess I'm gonna have to wait for the DVD. There is a chance it would be in Philly, but I don't think I'd want to go to see a chupped up version, even if Otomo was involved.

It's not like Otomo actually had creative freedom on Steamboy like he did on other projects anyway. He finally got the financing he'd been wanting, but the catch was that he had to finish it in less than two years, which isn't how most 2-d or anime films productions work. So hopefully, they'll let him do what he wants on Steamgirl, because I hate rushjobs.

That still doesn't excuse much.

Not only is this dubbed, but it's been butchered by 20 minutes
Do not support butchered anime, even the dublovers can get behind that. Do not see it, view it, and actively recommend others don't. These are the cities where Landmark has theaters: ATLANTA AUSTIN BOSTON BOULDER CHICAGO DALLAS DENVER DETROIT HOUSTON LOS ANGELES MADISON MILWAUKEE MINNEAPOLIS NEW ORLEANS NEW YORK CITY SAN DIEGO S.F. BAY AREA ..The City ..East Bay ..Peninsula SEATTLE ST. LOUIS WASHINGTON D.C. http://www.landmarktheatres.com Sony is starting to fall into the MiramAxe trap, first they cut Flying Daggars and now this. It cannot be tolerated. |

Well it does make for a good experiment if both versions exist in the same area. They can tell if dub or sub version is better accepted.
We should thank them for the opportunity to see the subbed version. |

The dub looks to be the same length as the original Japanese theatrical release. The director's cut has an extra 20 mins or so over and above that release.
I know this since I was fortunate enough (and unexpectedly so since I expected to see the Japanese theatrical version) to be able to see the director's cut at the tail-end of 2004. All-in-all I don't think that the dub will be missing anything the original theatrical release had but I haven't yet seen any other version but the director's cut to be able to make a true judgement. By the way... Go see it. It's amazing. |
