Some of you may already know this, but I thought it was really cool. There was a real unit in Kyoto during feudal times called the Shinsengumi. They were entrusted with the protection of Kyoto. Saitou Hajime was indeed one of the units many captians, but he didn't use the Gatotsu like in the series.

From what I've heard, some of the RK males were based off of the captains of the Shinsengumi (Captain of the 10th troop, Harada Sanosuke). Hope this helps.
