In the "Portraitz" episode of Ghost in the Shell:SAC that just aired last night, at the tail end of the episode, there was another quotation taken from the J.D. Salinger novel The Catcher in the Rye. The quote, which was on the catcher's mitt that Aoi was carrying, reads: "You know what I'd like to be? I mean if I had my goddamn chioce, I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all," which was spoken by the main character Holden Caulfield.

Did any of you that saw the episode catch it? Also, what are your thoughts on this GITS episode? There was suppose to be a major clue to the Laughing Man case, but I couldn't find it (probably because I was too busy trying to find the quote). Other than that, I thought it was a chilling episode with the way those poor kids were suffering, and how the institution was treating them. It also showed how affectionate Togusa could be, and it almost cost him his life.

Yeah... Had to stop my TiVo to catch it since it went by so fast I couldn't read it. I thought that was really cool.

Well, I think the "major" clue in the episode was the voice of the kid that Togusa first encounters under the computer. spoiler[It was the same voice as the man in white in the Chat! Chat! Chat! episode that Kusanagi followed through the library stacks]. Other than that, I guess the fact that Togusa couldn't draw a picture of the kid in the wheelchair (Awi?) was a big clue. Remember the pictures drawn by witnesses of the first Laughing Man attack? spoiler[So, either the kid in the wheelchair is the Laughing Man or had his ghost hacked by the Laughing Man]

No doubt! I love the direction that Kenji Kamiyama is taking the Laughing Man story. It's getting very mysterious.

If you actually have the book, go back and read the text surrounding the quote. Its a good hint for how the rest of the case will unfold.

Thanks, biliano, for posting the full text. I saw the words flash bye but din't quite catch what they said (having never read the book). I was planning to watch the episode next thursday to see what they said. Heck, I'll probably watch the episode anyway just so I can wrap my mind around it. Mr. Green

well i thought the person who was called spoiler[ the chief is actually the laughing man. If you recall he did say that he was going to have to leave and erase everyones memory but he was going to leave the children something to remember him by,the laughing man icon. Now his actual identity i dont know but i suspect that he was either originally in the institute or like some of the kids in the institute which would explain his exceptional cyber hacking abilities. Either or he's just some person who has cyber hacked into the boys ghost]
