Just watched the preview OVA for Mirai Nikki and it looks awesome, it has a premise in the same vein as Death Note, which I love.

And now with the ongoing experiment of a "master thread" for the season.

I'll work on indexing and quick-linking shows in the opening post later tonight or this week- I've already added links to a the ANN season guide and a couple final and rather comprehensive season charts...

Charts:
Neregate Fall 2011 Anime Chart v. 6- final
Nelson Fall 2011 Anime Chart- final

ANN’s List of Fall Season 2011 TV Anime in Japan

ANN's Fall 2011 Anime Prieview Guide and corresponding talkback thread

My First Impressions.

As with the previous season there are other good places to talk about first impressions, such as the talkback for the quarterly preview thread, but that one has a shelf life of a couple weeks only, this will keep up the discussion and you can follow up on your anticipation comments as well.

It's barely started and only a handful of shows have premeired so there's not much to mentions yet but here's some starting impressions.

Welcome returns:
Working!! - the first season was a favorite of mine, there's no way I won't enjoy it. The first episode was just getting you back to speed. For such a standard Slice-of-life show the first season was very good at moving things forward and introducing characters and situations, hopefully they can keep doing this.
Squid Girl - ditto to a lesser extent, good clean fun. Like Sgt Frog it is recommended to share with little kids that can read subtitles and aren't weirded out by the one girl crush (although I always find it's the guardians that have more of a problem with that sort of thing).
Bakuman 2 - I never loved the show but I enjoyed it well enough, glad to see it back.

Hunter x Hunter - not sure I'm in for such a prototypical "I wanna be the best!" Shonen series.

Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!! - I find it a little silly really, I'll watch a second episode to see the school side of things but it looks like a probable drop for me.

If it means anything...no character in the series wants to be the best at anything...the closest you get is a pseudo-villain...who was already "the best" the moment he was born and knows it.

In fact, the greatest thing about Hunter X Hunter is how reasonably weak the main characters are. The main characters consists of children while many of the villains happens to be adults, and their differences in strengths are usually maintained.

btw....is this the season of Shakugan no Shana and Zero no Tsukaima's return(final seasons)?

Well, you can understand my confusion then, on the ship Gon plainly declares something like I'm gonna be the best/strongest Hunter! in the first episode, to the derision of the surly grown-ups.
If it's not that type of show then that line sure fooled me. Wink

That's a problem I have with the remake.

They completely changed Gon's motivation. Gon's main reason for wanting to be a Hunter was tospoiler[ find his father who he JUST found out was alive and a famous Hunter.]

That...and the remake removed a very crucial character that's important to the story...the same character who sparked Gon's interest in becoming a Hunter in the first place.

I'm hoping they will remedy this in future episode...like flashbacks detailing Gon's first meeting with Kaito and finding out the truth about his father...this remake is certainly greatly condensed...and I would recommend you just go to Youtube and watch the other series first.

Oh, was I supposed to say something related to the thread? Er... I liked the start of Fate/Zero, though I agree the whole orbiting-Kotomine scene was a bit... odd. Yeah. Odd. But seeing Saber again (however briefly) made up for that.

I watched Maji de Watashi and there is no horizon so far. Both were very good. The main guys aren't your typical shonen lead characters. The Horizon anime might be a gem.

Thus far...

-Fate/Zero- Not a bad start. The first episode served to introduce the Masters for the Grail War thus it was mostly an info dump and there wasn't much for action. Thus far though, it definitely sticks out as the best looking series on the visual end for the season. Will keep checking out.
-Bakuman 2- Still retains the same things I like and dislike about the first season. While I like the show's believable look into the challenges of being a mangaka, I'm not so much digging the eccentric, over-the-top behavior of some prominent characters. Looks like I will be dealing with both ends once again for this season of the series.
-Kimi to Boku- I rarely say this about an anime title, but this is the first time in quite a while I've been very bored watching an anime and seeing the first episode to this series was like watching wallpaper dry on a wall. The characters spoke very deadpan, there was hardly any kind of mood and the humor was very dry. I've already chosen to ditch this show.
-Tamayura- Hitotse- My perceptions of the show are a bit mixed at the moment. I don't mind the seemingly bittersweet mood of the series considering it deals with moving on from a tragic loss. But the series was hammering on the emotional mood a bit too thick. Also, I'm not sure at this point if this is trying to be a moe comedy considering there were some comical moments in the episode and the way in which the characters were designed. I'll sample this series for a few more episodes before I determine whether or not I want to commit to it.

Watched 4 things today.

Phi Brain
Reminds me a lot of the early Yu-Gi-Oh manga/first series with the puzzle death traps. Definitely looking forward to more.

Hunter x Hunter
Never seen the original, but this seems to have promise.. I really like the business-suit guy, he's pretty funny.

Ika Musume 2
Cute and fun like the first season..

Digimon Xros Wars: Hunters
Follow up to Xros Wars seems very interesting, and I love the opening. Hopefully Digimon keeps going on strong.

Horizon in the middle of Nowhere.

They sure do talk a lot. It looks surprisingly lame and repetitive, I will give a second ep a chance if I am bored out of my mind with nothing to do I guess.

Updated: added new shows that I have watched.

Will keep watching:

Phi Brain
Seems like that this could be a interesting if not fun show to watch. I am curious to see how this progresses.

C3
I do not care if it is generic or not, there is something about this show that keeps me interested in watching more of it. I guess because I think there could be some potential for it to get better.

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai
I liked the first episode and I found it funny at times. I am curious to see where this goes with the story.

Chihayafuru
I knew a little bit about the card game in the series before hand, and I do not much experience with josei shows, but I was touched but what I saw here. This could be one of the top five shows of the season.

Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere
It is a mess, but it is an enjoyable mess. Plus an aggressive male lead is always a nice change of pace.

Maken-ki!
It has everything I need a fanservice romp, plus fighting which is always a plus.

On the fence:

Hunter x Hunter
I have not watched the original series and I do not know how long this version will be so I do not know if I want to have that kind of commitment to a potentially long running show at this time.

Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!!
I liked what I saw in the first episode, but I not sure how this is going to go.

Tamayura: Hitotose

I like cute girls doing cute things, but this show almost had me bored to tears. I will watch episode 2 to determine if I want to watch more of it or not.

Dropping:

Mashiro-Iro Symphony:
I like generic shows and I like VN adaptions, but this was way to generic for my tastes. It does not look like a lot of effort was put in the show and I did not even like the tsundere character and I love tsudere characters. The pacing was terrible to I mean spoiler[13 MINUTES TO FIND SOMEONE IN THE RAIN. WTF!!!!!]

You should mark that line to youthful exuberance, since Gon is a child and not an aged cynical anime fan, he full of energy and expresses his feelings openly. That line though is not the reason behind his choice to become a Hunter. Becoming the best/strongest hunter is just the means to an end for Gon. The end goal however has not been properly covered in this remake at this point.

The "shonen" category is a pretty expansive thing that covers titles like BECK to Dragon Ball. Assuredly HxH falls into the shonen category but anyone calling it a typical shonen at episode 1 ,or in some cases sight unseen, will be surprised where in the vast sea of shonen it fits if they actually commit to watching the series unbiasedly.

I don't know if anyone, or any of the reviewers in the previews have pointed out...

but C^3 have REALLY nice animation for a typical fanservicey ecchi series in my opinion. I didn't notice until Fear started her attempt to "clean up" the room.

As for what I'm going to watch so far....................

HunterXHunter: I have high hopes for this series thanks to my being a fan of the manga...and seeing the results that came from Brotherhood, which this series looks like is trying to imitate. The lack of Kaito is bothering me though.

C^3: I like it...I don't care about the overly negative scores this is getting. From my experience, in order to get an accurate assessment in regards to many anime, I have to read those anime previews with "opposite goggles" on.

Fate/Zero: Will be watching...the first episode was far too wordy, but I know that there will be tons of action afterwards. Plus...I like the Fate/Zero characters...except Rin's Mother...and Emiya. That guy is such a prick...and I just plain don't like the mother far for too many reasons despite being the character type I usually like.

Maybe watching....

Tamayura: Hitotose: First episode didn't show me much...

There's something that's disturbing me though....why the lack of lolicon series this season? Where is this season's Ryo-Ku-Bu/ Gosick/Astarotte's Toy?!

C3 and Kimi no Boku definitely deserve their low scores. C3 is godawfully incomplete and cliche-ridden, and Kimi no Boku is the most thoroughly boring anime I've seen in years.

What I've watched so far:

C3 - The whole time I was watching this I was... lost. There's just a lot of stuff going on that didn't make any sense. I will probably not watch this again.

Hunter X Hunter - This one I like. But there's probably some bias here because I loved the previous version of this anime. I'm glad it is of a faster pace than the first one. Kaito's not there though, which is, well different.

Phi Brain - I enjoyed this one. I love puzzles, so that's probably why. I wanna see more of this unsolvable puzzles and how the lead will go about solving them.

I haven't gotten around watching yet:

Fate/Zero - From the various posts I've read it seems to be promising. I did like Fate/Stay Night so this will probably work on me. In two weeks school will be over and I'll finally be able to make some way.
