I was about to order the Gundam dvds vol 1-10 from dvdpacific when a look here at ANN revealed that there seems to be two releases of each volume, one cut and one uncut. Anyone know the story behind this? Or even better, does anyone know which versions dvdpacific is selling?

They're only uncut. I don't remember a cut version ever being reported.

The VHS version were edited, while the DVDs are uncut. Notice that the 2 entries are, for example, "Mobile Suit Gundam [Dub Only] - The Red Comet (DVD 2)" and "Mobile Suit Gundam [Dub Only] - The Red Comet (Dub 2)" Dub 2 refers to the VHS release.

Keep in mind that these discs are dub only.

Yeah, unfortunately I already knew. I think their excuse was that there were no good Japanese audio sources left. But how the hell could Bandai let the beginning one of their most important franchises deteriorate so much is simply just beyond me. Well at least I can get it in one form or another on dvd, which is more than I can say about most other older anime series.

That's why they haven't released them in Japan

They won't let Bandai release a Japanese language DVD here until they're out in Japan

Is that what it is? I always wondered why I couldn't get Gundam subbed. I held off on buying the series because I thought, "One day, it will be available subbed". If that is the case, I will probably go about buying the series now.

Well if you want a cleaner, more crisp, subtitled, but shorter version of the original Mobile Suit Gundam, there's always the movie trilogy. The DVDs are sub only and have a totally new and made from scratch Japanese audio track in Dobly Digital 5.1. I haven't seen the TV series, but I thought movie trilogy was excellent even still.

Yes, I agree, the trilogy is very good. I just need to add the original series to my growing list of Gundam titles. If it isn't going to ever be available subbed, then I have just been waitng in vain. (sigh)
