Huh, I know exactly what RahXephon spoilerific scene the person is speaking of, but I remember my discs told me what those lights said in subs. Maybe it was a mistake earlier on that was fixed in re-releases? Or maybe they go off if the OP/ED subs are off. I have this set, btw, which is in the weekly specials so people should pick it up.
Anyway, I want more manga about reincarnation! No idea why, but I just do. |

As I recall, RahXephon had two subtitle tracks, one for full subs, and one just for signs/songs. However the English dub defaults to NO subtitles on most of the discs, so you have to change to the signtitles if you want them.

This is the case. The disks default to English audio and no song subtitles. If you change it to English with song subtitles it also translates signage and the words in lights in that particular episode. (I have the singles, by the way.) |

As others mentioned, many shows have an on-screen text subtitle track. However, some shows actually don't. I remember having to turn on the full blown subtitles while watching Nana to figure out what the heck various text messages and e-mails said.

As others have said, the actual DVDs do have a Songs/Signs Only subtitle track that theoretically should play automatically if you throw the disc in and press Play. It did when I tested it just now. However, some of the dual-audio DVD-rips out there omit that Songs/Signs track. So if you were watching one of those, then yeah, you'd miss out on that stuff unless you turned the full subtitles on. As far as ADV releases go, I don't think I've ever seen one that didn't have either a Song/Sign Only softsub track or hardsubbed lyrics and text (seen in some of their early DVDs circa 1999-2001). |

I once sent VIZ a check which they sent me back un-cashed. So they are not bribable.
Though I have never tried bribing Funimation, I did write to them and asked for a set of Mushi-Shi postcards that were a con exclusive. Even though I wasn't able to attend the con, I offered to pay for them if they had an extra set. They just asked for my address, no payment required! And they just sent them to me!!! They didn't even ask me to pay postage! I've had a pretty rose-colored outlook about Funimation ever since. (though I still won't buy fanservice shows. Sorry, Funi....  )

The Funimation suit failed because you can't use mass lawsuits like that in court. Similar lawsuits against downloaders of movies and porn were also tossed, so this was no surprise. Everybody ran around screaming like this was some massive thing to hit, but it played out exactly like every single other case like this.
And about the ISPs cracking down on filesharing, well, there are probably a lot of rumors floating around, but if you actually read the plan, it's a very reasonable approach. It focuses on education, not punishment for infringement. It a win for everyone, content producers get anti-piracy measures, ISP don't punish their paying customers, and the common man doesn't have to worry as much about lawsuits. |

Getting subs for signage right is tricky, without a doubt. I like to know what a sign says if it is dramatically relevant, or especially interesting, but if a character is walking past a row of shop fronts, and every single sign gets its own subtitle, that's just a little too distracting.
I have just sent off an email about next column's subject, but it just occurred to me I'd also like to see more anime and manga about ... making anime and manga! But preferably of a higher standard than Comic Party. |

Tagalog-dubbed anime almost never does sign translation. School Rumble S1 and Special A are two exceptions. Tangentially, I guess it's cheaper to leave the credits in Japanese than to ask for "clean" versions from the anime studios, though sometimes we get ready-made English credits.
Regarding this week's question, I'd like to see more yuri. Preferably without relying on the lesbian Catholic schoolgirl cliché, much as I like Cream Lemon: Escalation, Strawberry Panic, and Marimite. More adult relationships would be nice. Subtext and secondary yuri will have to do in the meantime. |

This week's question: JOSEI!!!
I'm a fan of J-drama so I know that a lot of josei manga is on TV in this form like Kimi wa Petto. But I loved watching Nana and Kuragehime in anime form. And I preferred the anime version of Nodame Cantible over the drama. So I'd like to see more josei hitting the airwaves in animated form. (and I wish more American companies would release more josei manga in the states, but that's not part of the question  )

Yes. Period. Moral relativism should never be the yardstick to measure a response or action, because "heads I win, tails you lose" does not establish a fair market environment. This has nothing to do with the debate about trickle-down economics, it is a simple foundation-level issue: they cannot sustain producing content without the funding that comes from someone buying. Voting with your wallet is always an active choice. Choosing to value food and shelter over entertainment is perfectly understandable. Expecting everything else to be made a public good just so you don't loose out, is not. |
