mine so far:
Paranoia Agent-Probabably Satoshi Kon's best work to date Fullmetal Alchemist- every time you think you know everything, this show has some crazy new twist. technically it started in 2003, but i didn't start watching it til this year. Samurai Champloo- even if you hate hip hop, this show is briilliant, Genshiken- probably the most accurate depiction of an otaku ever made. Dead Leaves- despite it's lack of plot, you gotta love the pure insanity of it all. Monster- Great Character development. Johan is the best villian ever. Ghost in the Shell: StandAlone Complex because I've been waiting for a sequel, Witch Hunter Robin (aired in US in 2004) because the style is interesting and the plot intrigued me.

Dead Leaves for sure, abolutely insane. loved the stylish animation, and the action is top notch. recommend it to any fan of the mad arts

I've seen a couple of episodes of School Rumble. It looks like it'll be a very entertaining show. Gankutsuou look interesting also, but I've only seen the first episode. And of course Samurai Champloo is a favorite. For those of you who aren't in to fansubs and are awaiting this fine anime to be released domestically, you're in for a treat (if you like Bebop or Kenshin)

I am planning to do a separate thread for a "Best of 2004" awards section (and yes, they won't all be serious awards and there will be commentary), but I am going to wait until the actual end of the year to do it because there's still some significant releases due out next week on DVD, including the second Inuyasha movie and GITS2: Innocence.

Azumanga Daioh was my favorite anime of 2004, and I believe it was the best anime series of 2004. This is an anime that contains no giant robots, no gory violence, no fan service, and no angst-ridden characters. It's just records the average lives of six high-school girls with different personalities, but in a way that is so humorous and fun that every anime fan will enjoy it. ADV should get a lot of credit for two things: the translator notes that were included in the various volumes and the excellent dub cast, with Kira Vincent-Davis (Osaka) and Jessica Boone (Chiyo) providing the best performances.

Best show being release in Japan (fansub)? Or best show beling release here (R1?) I figure its' another best fansub of 2004 thread. |

Not necessarily. If you read a few of the posts, they clearly state titles that were also released in the U.S. this year. So if you want, you can tell us your favorites for 2004 whether it came out in Japan or here. 
And with that, I'll say Last EXILE, Azumanga Daioh, and RahXephon: Pluralitas Concentio are a few that I found very entertaining. Last EXILE (from what I've seen so far) is a great science fiction story in a well-balanced setting of both fantasy and technology, and I feel it's a great series to this point. The art and animation are very good and the music is especially enjoyable with it's flavor of Celtic and generic orchestrated music, while the intro and ending songs add the final touch of J-pop to make it a complete package for me  .
Azumanga Daioh is just plain fun for me. I can understand most of the characters (except for Yuukari-sensei  ) and sort of empathize for them, which is what makes the overall presentation as delightful as I'm finding it. The music is very cheery, and the over-the-top antics in each episode never present a dull moment. It's no masterpiece, but I regard it as a good, light-hearted pick-me-up.
And although the first half of RahXephon: Pluralitas Concentio is just recap, I still find the second half to be an excellent sort of retilling of what could've happened. And best of all, the ending was very heart moving, in my opinion, making the conclusion of the entire anime franchise much more resolute. The artbox for it is also very pretty  .
And there you have it. Unless I see anything else new that I really like before the end of the year or just remember something out of the blue, then this will just about do it for now. Merry Christmas to all of you and Happy New Year. I'm sure there will be much more good anime to come in the next few months and beyond in 2005.

My favourite anime of 2004 are the volumes of Super GALS! that got released domestically in 2004.
That's all I've seen. EDIT: Oh, wait, no, I also got the first volume of Tenchi Muyo GXP and it's a good dose of the aspects of the show I like, but Super GALS! is just so endearing. I also saw one episode of One Piece but found it very "meh". And I don't really care about any of the anime YTV is currently showing. |
