FINALLY!!!!!!!!! AZUMANGA DAIOH IS A SHELF WORTHY TITLE!!!!!!!!!! MY CHRISTMAS WISH HAS COME TRUE!!!!!!!!!!
I saw Gundam F91 at the Anime Weekend in Lakewood, and I thought is was an OK movie. The begining of the movie, I felt, was rushed to the point that I nearly fell asleep; however, I agree that the movie did get interesting around the middle, and near the end of the movie displayed some of the best Gundam fight scenes I've seen in my brief association with the franchise.
The ending was also very weak and uninspiring.
But that's irrelevant now: AZUMANGA DAIOH IS A SHELF-WORTHY TITLE!!!!!!!!!! So if this miracle can happen, than someday Cleveland will celebrate a championship (I can only hope).
Anyway, to you, Bamboo, and the rest of the ANN staff: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Ugh... even though I can see why it would go on the rental shelf, at least Maison Ikkoku HAS an end, unlike Ranma, Inu-Yasha, and Urusei Yatsura. It's not as dead end as Takahashi's other infamously long series.
I could go into a longer tirade about my thoughts about where the series goes, but it'd be pointless.
Other than that minor nitpick, I'm inclined to agree with the rest of the column.

Yeah, Maison Ikkoku should never be a rental shelf item. Why recommend buying part of a series, then the rest as a rental item. That is just stupid.

Perhaps when only part of a series is worth buying and the rest is only worth renting. That sounds kind of redundant thought doesn't it?

The real tragedy of it is that Gundam F91 was original slated to be a rather promising 52-episode TV series, with the events in the movie being an extremely condensed rendition of the first thirteen episodes or so. The rest of the story was then retold in a few manga series...Crossbone, and I think maybe some of the F90/Silhouette Formula editions.

Well, to me, it makes sense to own the entire series even if a review says that the rest is only rental shelf worthy.

Does anyone know why this happened?

You can knock Oshii, but his basset hounds are awesome. If only they had an Oscar award for animated animals...

Masion Ikkoku belongs on the "Buy it" list. It's without a doubt one of the greatest romance animes of all time (and you will be hard pressed to find a better romance manga). To see it on the "Rent it" list is just a shame.
That's just my opinion.

A friend of mine mentioned this time me after we'd watched it at Otakon... fortunately for me, at least, I was able to infer most to all of the missing plot from the sketchy summary that was given, but it still required me to be paying close attention to do so (and that's saying something). So it wasn't too bad, but kinda unfortunate that so much had to be crammed into so little space.

I agree with Bamboo that Gundam F91 was boring as hell. Undoubtedly the weakest of Yoshiyuki Tomino's Gundam works. In the past, all of Tomino's Gundam titles were about story and character development. In F91, all of Tomino's principles were practically thrown out the window. Aside from being a condensation of a 13-episode storyline, here are some of the movie's weak spots:
- Pacing. The first half of the film is dragging, and then all of a sudden, many random events happen and there is little or no explanation on most of them.
- Characters. People who watch Gundam titles usually feel sorry for main protagonists like Amuro (0079) and Kamille (Zeta) because of everything happening around them. As for Seabook, he's just completely uninteresting as a lead character. And "Iron Mask" Ronah is a Darth Vader wannabe who is absolutely nothing compared to the Zeon, Titans and Axis/Neo-Zeon leaders of the past.
- Ending. It's disappointing not only because most Tomino titles aren't supposed to have happy endings, but hardly anything was resolved at the end of the film.
All of this and I'm surprised no one mentioned the imitation "Imperial March" theme.
On the bright side, the ending theme "Eternal Wind ~Hohoemi wa Hikaru Kaze no Naka~" is an excellent song. (It does remind me of the Wilson Phillips song "Hold On.")

Why wasn't Char's Counterattack mentioned as a synonym for Gundam F91? Perhaps because unlike F91, Char's Counterattack is a good movie.

Because I only wrote down a few, and accidentally left at CC.
Re: Maison Ikkoku
Rental Shelf doesn't mean you shouldn't ever buy it. It just means that you should *at least* give it a rental. If you decide to buy it, that's your own business. I personally didn't like that boxset. I thought the stuff that happened was really boring. Personally, I like the first two boxsets, and the last one. 4, I feel, is much weaker than the other ones. Just because a series is good doesn't mean that the entire thing is good. Most series will invariably have a weak point, and in my mind, the middle episodes of MI were rather weak and repetitive.
The rating system for Shelf Life is only split into 3 categories. Pretty much just Great!, Good/Decent, and Bad. So when it comes to things that I feel are worth watching, but not "WOW GREAT! GO BUY THIS RIGHT NOW!" I put it in Rental. This isn't to say that you should only buy part of the series, mind you. Just that parts of the series are Great! and parts of them are Good/Decent, and throwing them into SW and RS are the only ways that I can differentiate between the two.

So how could something titled Gregory Horror Show end up in anything but perishable?....

The same can be said for the titles placed in the Perishable section: It's all a matter of personal preference. For example, Nurse Witch Komugi and Sister Princess were listed as perishable items, but I enjoyed them to the point that I actually dropped the money to own these particular titles. (I guess that means that I enjoy watching train wrecks.)
