[SNIP] I'm sure ADV had very good reasons to sell Gantz in that format. Having seen the trailer on the official Japanese site, it comes off as a dark series which would probably have to be slapped with a 17+, thus depriving it of a larger fanbase. And of course, it could've been expensive to license, making it tough for ADV to make a clean profit.
[edit - Gatsu, if you have a gripe with another website's content, air it elsewhere. This thread is about the Gantz news. -b]

At $17.99 per DVD, for 13 DVD's this is $233.87, most other 26 episode releases are 7 or 8 DVD's at $29.99, so it could be more expensive or cheaper depending on the number of DVD's
Gantz release:
13 x $17.99 = $233.87
Other typical 26 eps anime:
7 x $29.99 = $209.93
8 x $29.99 = $239.92

Or the Japanese producers might simply have ADV "by the gonads" so to speak, and won't allow them to release the series in any more than two episode per disc intervals. It's happened before (FLCL), and it's been documented that some production companies are afraid of Japanese citizens importing US anime DVDs instead of paying for their own ridiculous "$60 for two episodes" nonsense. It might've even been a trade-off of sorts: two episodes per disc for uncut footage.

Boxsets that are double the length of Gantz get sold for half the price. What this is counts as nothing less than robbery.

2 episode per disc? This is super lame.
Bring on the manga instead, at least you'll get the whole TV arc with like 4 or 5 volumes of manga.

with the cost they are suggesting, I highly doubt I'll be buying it... since I didn't see it before it was licensed, looks like I'll be renting instead, which means the only people who get money out of it is whomever I'm renting it from.

No, even if you rent it from them, some of the money they used to buy the DVD to allow you to rent it went to the distributor (ADV in your case).

It's not that I don't understand that, but for each person who rents instead of purchasing, then each one could be considered a "sale" that ADV didn't get. It's just semantics.

Of course, the rental company has to pay 2 or 3 times the normal cost when purchasing.

Once again, you reply to an item on ANN that has nothing to do with my own stuff and only muddy things up. Remember that a "Chris" runs this site too and to some they're probably wondering what you're talking about.
Regardless, I run my site how I like it and have for seven years now. We all know you don't like it. I'm not running a News Site, we're not attached to google news and the site has very much been My Opinion since day 1.
Find a new chip on your shoulder, this is just old beyond belief.

Hmm... the comic book store where I often rent stuff from just uses a sale copy, so that's really not the case at all here... I don't know about the rest of the online companies, and I'm hardly an expert in that field, but my understanding of the current retail companies is that they no longer have to pay that much either. As far as the online renters? I don't have a clue how much they pay for their copies.

I've got to agree with Chris here. Regardless of whose decision this is, ADV's or the Japanese producers'... this is beyond ridiculous.
Suggestion to ADV: You might try to soften the blow by releasing these in thinpak cases so that the box isn't such a gigantic waste of shelf space...

There is one particular movie made in 1984 that I want. It is called Electric Dreams, but it is available as a VHS rental, however, you can buy the VHS tape for it at what a renter would buy it, for $54. I've seen it on Amazon.com as VHS (where the $54 comes from) as well as eBay (mostly PAL VHS and some R0 DVD's), but I prefer to wait until it comes available on DVD eventually

I hope they don't decide to do this for all of their releases. It's been a long time since I've had to buy anime at 2 episodes a release, and I think it's a poor step. The pricing may even out in the end, but fans are more likely to pay more for more episodes, than less for less. For a 26 episode series, 13 is just ridiculous.

if MSRP is 18$ that means that some stores will have it for less.
