I kinda need more info on this to say for myself whether or not he should get punished. How did he even run into the old woman? he was probably approaching a green light or something so he wouldn't have stopped right in the middle of the road just to look and see what was in the seat.
The old woman must have not waited for the green light to change. Or she probably walked across the road at some random middle point of the sidewalk( you know...you got 1 end of sidewalk and another end, she probably crossed right in the middle of it...that's what I mean )...I do that alot but I wait and see if there are barely any cars approaching.

Typo: "Women's" means more than one woman died.

I would say RIP Kentaro's career but that is already done anyway.
It's terrible that the woman died. I always hate when people die in traffic accidents because it's a painful way to go .

Pedestrian in a crosswalk?
I always thought pedestrian in a crosswalk, even if they're crossing at the tail end of the light get the right of way. Basically, drivers are always supposed to keep an eye peeled & only get off in the best of circumstances. Drivers are supposed to be on the watch for pedestrians, but particularly in crosswalks.
When I read the statement, I thought it meant the woman was crossing on a green light. His excuse of being distracted suggests he is the one at fault, but maybe people cross on red lights in Japan?

People cross against lights all the time, legally or not.
While legally, pedestrians have the right of way, in reality, the car always has the right of way because, well, it'll run you over if you're not paying attention.

I fully comprehend pedestrians should NEVER assume the right of way is theirs, but then NONE of us are supposed to assume that.
Are we not supposed to keep an eye out for the unexpected?
And I would say, considering the cops are looking at citing him for killing this woman, he did not have the right of way & he's possibly going to pay for ignoring the pedestrian's right of way.
Might doesn't equal right.

Well there are signs that let you know when to cross. She could have been jaywalking.
The woman died so he's going to be charged with something.
