spelling correction: "stationery" toward the end is missing an r.

I'm interested in what their new mascot could be, but I have a feeling that it would be something a lot of people in the West have not heard of. Can anyone name anything similar to Hello Kitty that isn't licensed yet?

Well, to get something established in both Japan and America, that's been plastered on t-shirts, toys and games... they'd have to go for Domo-kun, right? If they could get the rights to that, they'd probably be raking in the dough.

A less likely alternative they could purchase rights to would be Doraemon, but I have a feeling that there's a snowball's chance in hell of that happening.

The only thing I can think of is Domo. Domo's already pretty popular around the world. Not as much as the behemoth that is Hello Kitty, of course, but still.

I think Tokyopop licensed it in the past, but they're history. So there's a huge opening in North America at the moment.

"If a suitable character is found, it would be the first time that Sanrio would use a character that it did not develop in-house."

I'm not sure if the above statement is entirely accurate.....
Didn't Sanrio assist in the distribution of Osamu Tezuka's "Unico"?
I believe they also produced the anime "Ringing Bell"....
....and I know for a fact that at one point Blue from "Blue's Clues" had a deal with the Sanrio company... (as seen here---> http://www.viacomasia.com/pdfs/pressroom/pressreleases/nick_hellokitty.pdf )

Hmmm...a popular character in both the US and Japan?
How about Pikachu? Good gravy....if Sanrio and the Pokemon company combined they could probably take over the world....couldn't they?

Shocked

It could be anything really. But to be honest, it would surprise me if Doraemon because it would likely be the first ever anything Doraemon related I heard of getting licensed in the US.

It could also be Domo as well. Now that Tokyo Pop went out of business, Domo is up for grabs in the market, so to say.

I don't get it, Doesn't Sanrio already have a ton of characters lying around that they don't use? Cinnamoroll, for instance.

Dammit! I know it! I miss it when they used to sell other character goods like Minna no Tabo, Keroppi, or Badtz Maru.

Sanrio Stores feel so stale these days because they just sell Hello Kitty + a couple other characters that are uninteresting as well //end old person rant

Aw! I love Hello Kitty... Im curious to see what character theyre interested in, but I really think theyre doing well for themselves with Kitty already... I would be sad to see less Hello Kitty stuff as its just starting to pop up more in my area. We dont have a Sanrio store, at least that I've ever come across, so it's harder to find it.... at least stuff that isn't t-shirts for little girls.

Maybe Sanrio will distribute Nyanpire in the US. I can't see the cartoon making it over here, but the character itself is very marketable, in the Monster High/Skelanimals way, and it'd fit right in with the whole "cute cats being cute" thing.

Yes Sanrio did have rights to Unico but after his passing they reverted the rights back to the company. So unless he would go back Anime hyper
