Slow news day (nothing to post) so I figured I'd point this one out despite it being a bit old now... (I knew about it earlier but passed on posting it at the time... stupid people saying stupid things isn't really news).

If you want to read the full article, you can find it here:

I wonder if watching TV leads teenagers to watch violent and pornographic movies?

I get what you're trying to say, but that's a poor example. This is just one kind of media.

For some reason, people seem to neglect that books(You know, full of "boring small text") aren't completely "pure" either. I think reading "Green Eggs and Ham" might make someone seek out the works of Piers Anthony, who's books contain, *GASP!* sexually explicit content! Or a violent book, like the Animorphs, which look innocent on the cover, but that is a trick of the DEVIL! SATAN makes those child-book covers to hide the VIOLENCE and even DEATH in these children's books! THEY ARE EVIL! Also, a fantasy book, entitled "Eragon", contains MAGIC, and VIOLENCE, which are tools of the DEVIL!! WE MUST BURN ALL BOOKS EXCEPT THE BIBLE TO SHIELD OUR CHILDREN!!!!

Lovely, just lovely. Its this kind of mentality that breeds a shallow society. I mean common, not like all manga are violent, or have incest or rape in them, especially ones for your average 13-16 year old, which dwarf in comparasion to the more raunchy stuff.

Why is incest in there anyways? Does society really frown down upon it THAT much to the point that its as unsafe as violence and rape? I mean, damn...alot of manga portray it as as a cutesy kind of love...unless fingers are being pointed at the more extreme stuff, which is more of an adult novelty than anything else, hardly to be taken seriously, and most manga arent meant to be taken seriously anyways really.

I tell ya, this worlds beliefs are a mixed bag of chex mix...and not the good kind mom used to make.

But there are just regular ol' books that depict any themes of which you could find in manga. I'm not sure, but don't they have libraries in British schools? And isn't it their goal to encourage kids to read?! Saying schoolkids might go on to read darker varieties of manga but not go on to read darker varieties of books is preposterous. Media is media; the differences between different types of media is in the way they are presented, not the content.

The article thingy wrote:
"Child murder, incest and rape... is this really how our schools should be encouraging boys to read?"

It worked for Stratford-Upon-Avon's own William Shakespeare. Good God, Titus alone makes most manga seem shamefully tame by comparison.

And veering away from the education system, what about the Bible? The stories there even make Shakespeare seem shamefully tame by comparison! Laughing

Wow. The article seems to have been created just to push people into believing that all manga is bad. Everybody doesn't want to read only literature classics, they want variety. Let's hope this doesn't spread over here.

I dunno, but they're mostly pointing to those "Hentai" and manga related to Berserk, Gravitation and all those mangas targeted at teens of 17 years or the young adult category.

But indeed, that there's plenty of manga that don't deal with those issues. SJ Mangas like; Whistle!, Prince of Tennis, Houshin Engi & One Piece. And there's TP's Suikoden III as well (based on the popular PS2 rpg) etc.

Heck there's even mangas that lil kids read as well. Hence the "Youth" category that's labeled on some of the mangas on Tokyopop and "All Ages" labeled on Shonen Jump.

Well, it's like I said. There's plenty of manga that doesn't deal with those kind of issues.

And besides I don't read that far. The only mangas I read would be Whistle! Prince of Tennis, One Piece, Yakitate & Houshin (based on a Chinese story).

This is just a load of crap as usual. It seems someone doesn't like Manga and there for it is being bashed. This happens all the time all over the world. In fact, a couple of months ago Adam on Love Line started a rant about how weird japanese animation is (about the eyes and such). This is not the first time, nor the last time something like this will surface in the media. It's to be expected by now.

Even if they get hooked on manga, which isn't a terrible thing, at least they would STILL be reading.. There are far more dangerous things I think they should be worried about kids getting "hooked" on.

I think it has alot to do with the fact that older British people are still uptight and snooty, and tend to not like anything besides stuff like Shakespear or whatever.

Is no one going to point out the absurdity of using manga in high school curriculum in the first place? Why not give students a homework assingment of watching The Simpsons or teach them how to play video games during second period? This is a sure sign of the dumbing down of British schools. What ever happened to reading books with, like, text and no pictues?

(note: I am in no way denegrating manga or those who read it. I am just saying that it is entertainment and should be viewed as such.)

This article concerned me until I saw the kind of "news" they normally publish.... for instance, today's headlines are about:
Murder Conspiracy of Princess Diana
Prince Harry's vacation with his latest fling
Search for the "Postman Murderer"

I'm sure they were *this close* to having a story about "Bat Boy"

A lot of British popular press is extremly trashy, which generally surprises Americans. It's not really worth paying much attention to.
