A Ph.D for manga. Nice.
Now time for someone from America to go through that program. Take it home. And teach others (in America) how to make 'em. 
Even more seriously, if anyone is really up to making a career in manga, striving for this Ph.D. is a good way to go. Best of luck to anyone who tries. |

Fffffffff I could so get my masters in sequential art, then get my doctorate in manga. My PHD thesis could be Why Gintama is Awesome.
Anyone who's read my BFA thesis paper would know that I am perfectly capable of writing that much about Gintama*. 
* The paper was actually about my personal comic project, but since Gintama is such a huge influence on the way I work, it got a bit of a mention. |

Unless of course you career is in very high demand presently. But even then, it still won't be a easy feat to accomplish. But onto the topic here, although that idea does sound cool, is it really all that practical though? I mean it's great if your going into the manga, maybe even anime industry, but any other field and it might not be all that impressive to potential employers. However, given that most (not all mind you) manga is made in Japan, you'd stand better chances taken more seriously there with this degree then here maybe. But then again, even though it is a manga degree, you still would have to work very hard to get it, so that might be a plus for potential employers. It's one thing to read manga, but it's a entirely different ball game to study and analyze the more complex areas of the subject. But if your a fan of reading manga, it might come easier, so that is also a possibility as well. |

Ya don't need a Ph.D. to get work in the manga/anime industry. Sometimes it may even be a detriment. As my ol' math grad student-teacher once agonized over: if he continues on to get his Ph.D., it pretty much means he's stuck in academia work because he'd be so far into math theories and out of touch with practical industries, making him unattractive to companies. Instead, he just kept his Masters and worked in the computer industry. |

Whoa! You can really be a doctor of manga?? This is all kinds of bizarre and cool, all at once. You could go to class dressed as BlackJack, and if students ask why, glibly reply: "I'm a doctor."
I wonder what kinds of classes they require? Maybe you study economic aspects, or the spread of manga around the world, manga history, or maybe even more philosophical things, like for dissertation: What is manga? I'm guessing manga must be important enough in Japanese culture to have attained such a status... Or it's just something peculiar to this school, but in any case it's an altogether strange and interesting thing. |
