Music definitely reaches one emotionally in an anime Wink Without it there wouldn't be so many emotions portrayed. Imagine watching a scene of tragedy or elation with no music to help add to the intensity? Sometimes you need a dramatic pause but to me music is just as important as a seiyuu or character animation etc. I certainly have a flow of emotions depending on the scene and what music is played to convey the scene to me Anime smile

Ooh. I know of plenty of music that personally gets my emotions going. Well, not that it makes me want to perform the action in accordance to the music being played, but it puts me in that mindset, so to speak.

There's too many titles for me to remember off the top of my head, but I'll try to name a few.

Great Teacher Onizuka -- A masterpiece of drama with just as good a soundtrack. Yes, the actual selection of music isn't much, but I feel it does its job very well through every scenario given. It plays the funny music when Onizuka's being himself, and strikes just the right chord when he's doing his "great teacher" thing in helping his students.

If not for the uber crappy and overwhelmingly unprofessional dub, I'd even say the music is that good enough to overcome that little flaw, but if you've seen the show in Japanese, you'd know what I mean. I believe Tokyopop has a compilation OST out, right now. It's a shame they don't have the Openings and Endings though Anime cry.

Hellsing -- If you're in the mood for action, this is the soundtrack you should listen to. Not that every track is full of mind blowing rock, but if you've seen the series enough (took me one time Razz), then you ought to be able to have a feel for it.

I'd have to say this soundtrack, in partiuclar, is unique, since I haven't really heard anything like it before (in anime, that is). Available domestically thanks to Geneon Entertainment.

Kare Kano -- This show has a very fitting soundtrack to it and is very relaxing, an much like the series' romance, it's very quaint, but fits the mood perfectly, in my opinion. If you want to just kick back and think to yourself for a while, I recommend you get the OST (which is available in America, again, thanks to Geneon Wink).

Vision of Escaflowne -- If you're feeling adventurous sometime (in a medieval fantasy sort of way) and want the music to accompany it, Escaflowne is probaby THE best choice. Yoko Kanno's knowledge of Western music really sticks out in these pieces and goes very well with Hajime Mizoguchi's stuff.

It has a very Euro-feudal feel to it, which is easy to hear through the superb performance of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. It kind of reminds me of what you'd hear in say... a good Disney film. Not to mention, the vocal songs are awesome too.

--------------
There's a few more I could name, but I'm running a little short on time right now, so I'll try putting up some more later. Smile

Good luck finding your music! Wink

Hum...Yeah...But...That's not an exclusively thing from anime. Every "continuated images thing", let's say video(anime, movies, T.V., etc)...All of them get better when they use an appropiate music at every moment. And then I would have to say that anime is not better than some great movies...As the My Heart will go on song at Titanic.

So doesn't that apply to anime then? Anime smile + sweatdrop Naturally anything with the "continuated images thing" will of course have the added emotion with appropriate music, what I'm saying is that anime is one of those things that is much more appealing with it. So technically it's not wrong to suggest right? Wink

Music helps make the show. I just re-watched the first few episodes of Noir yesterday. I can't say enough about how Kirika's mysterious sadness is masterfully portrayed and accompanied by my favorite anime song ever, Canta Per Me. And you just know it's ON when the metal/techno/operatic Salva Nos kicks on. I can feel the kinetic energy Salva Nos gives the closing fights. Sight and sound working together to deliver the desired effect. RahXephon's soundtrack was similar in this regard as well. The music that plays when the RahXephon rises to meet the dolem of the day is pretty neat. On the gentler side, Kare Kano's soundtrack does the same job, whether the mood on screen is sentimental, dark and brooding, or joyfull. After Noir's, Kare Kano's soundtrack is definitely my next favorite.

Music can definitely make or break scenes. I just finished Mai-HiME #3, and Yuki Kajiura's music absolutely dominated the animation during the fight scenes. I was like, "Whoa...what's going on here?" while listening to the music. It's the same sort of thing with .hack//SIGN; I found myself more enthralled by the soundtrack than what was happening on screen.

Conversely, there are a bunch of OSTs out there that make me remember the anime more. Saikano, Kare Kano and Kiminozo all come to mind, for instance. When I hear songs from those shows, I'm instantly immersed in the scene from where that song was played. In that case, the music plays total background to what's going on, so when you hear the tunes again, it's like being transported right back to the anime. There's definitely a fine line to tread.

Music has a definite effect on the viewer of a show. Example: Fox saw Star Wars A New Hope without it's soundtrack. They thought it was complete and utter crap. George Lucas then brought it back, unaltered except this time with the soundtrack, and they loved it.

Music definatly helps stir emotions and atmosphere in a story.
