No, they're selling on the merits of the show not the studio.

Sorry, but I've seen enough anime to know what those merits are like. They're not cheap or inferior, but definitely not outstanding. I'd go as far as to attribute all these sales to lolicon/magical girls otaku. 50k is relatively a low number if you look at the industry as a whole, and if you account for those who bought multiple discs, which is realistic considering the actions its rabid fanbase took, i.e., going to another prefecture simply to watch the broadcast because it airs earlier in said territory.

To compete for best, you'll have to be innovative. Madoka isn't. It simply blended a bunch of genres magical girl titles haven't. Give it adult characters and a different studio, and we'd have an entirely different story.

50k is a big number. it's probably 30-40% of the total anime series bluray sale that week.
AS Innovative. this is what i found.

"For innovation to occur, something more than the generation of a creative idea or insight is required: the insight must be put into action to make a genuine difference, resulting for example in better or altered business processes within the organization, or positive changes in the products and services provided. "

the important part is "positive changes in the products". you can make something new, if it doesn't do well that's not innovation. that's probably call, you messed it up. and Innovation doesn't has to be something totally different than what's out there.

The first Madoka Magica volume supplants the former record-holder, the sixth and final Blu-ray volume of Bakemonogatari (51,000 units). Not incidentally, Akiyuki Shinbo directed both projects.

Clearly the man has his fingers on the otaku pulse at the moment.

No. Mad

Anyway, I've never seen this show, but I've seen a lot of peepz losing their collective shit over how great they say it is. Tbh, I've never really been into magical girl shows too much, but I'll probably end up giving this one a shot when it gets licensed.

The best anime of the year so far. Don't judge a book by it's cover.

Certainly the most "popular" anime of the year so far...
If only incorporating genres and iconic storytelling gimmicks was enough.

Ok... The only other BD-Animes that sold more are:
- Bakemonogatari with a long running Novel background
- Gundam Seed + Seed Destiny with a very big franchise.
- FMA (which is only 2k ahead of madoka)

Then comes a close tie between Madoka and Geass, both are original Anime, without a previous Fanbase.

The 50k are a remarkable number, for Madoka being an original Anime.
Further, although i find it hard to say, the Earthquake had probably a negative impact on the sales number.

In short: Madoka beats any television anime released on blue ray up to date.

My god, what this news said is entirely different!

Wake up. That's not the path I'm following.

Let's not base the entire shit on numbers, I beg you. We all know Twilight sucks.

Mixed feelings like mad here! On the one hand, I love it when shows I love succeed and make back money! On the other hand, I really want to get this show on R1, and if it's a huge phenomenon then it might be a while until it gets licensed due to huge licensing fees. DO NOT KNOW HOW TO FEEL.

This is where 'Your opinion sucks - no your opinion sucks' debate comes. u.u~~~

Madoka Magica was most absorbing animation to the date for me. It definitely deserve its praise. Just wait for 2nd volume. It will be even more outrageous than this one...

No, really, the internet has been simultaneously exploding with praise for this show, I'd think the reason why people love it has kind of been made clear if you check most sites where discussion of anime occurs.

As for the debates on whether or not it 'deserves' its praise, I would certainly say it does. Personally, I think taking tried and true formulas that sell but have been done to death and putting some sort of spin on it that makes it feel fresh again is just as commendable as doing something completely from left field. Madoka is legitimately enjoyable. It's solid, there's nothing extraneous in it, and its conclusion is conclusive. Nothing falls apart. No one was ever sure of where it was going until it ended. Those are marks of a good show.

I think we have the definition of special pleading here. Easily in the top 1% of sales = "meh, no big deal."

What exactly is it with this news item and people trying to downplay it? There have already been several examples in this thread.

No, really, internet often implodes after several things. Just like a toilet seat whenever it's stuck with crap.

Oh, passion. Such an unlimited volume of blindness.
