This really isn't the correct forum to place this, but being on the subject of proper english, I noticed the horrible spelling that is being done by a majority of the users in this forum, and its getting worse, and its driving me nuts. Even if your primary language isn't english, please make sure you do your best to spell correctly, because a mispelled word can mean something different than what you are intending.
This link: http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/ is helpful in finding the correct spellings of words, and I know a lot of people have MS Word or some sort of word processor on their system, and therefore can use that (using its spell checker) to find the correct spelling of words. Please remember that even if this is an informal place on the internet, people don't exactly like trying to read through someone's mispelling and grammar mistakes. It also seems that public schools no longer teaches people how to use proper english (for those of us in America) like they did 15 years ago. Also, please indicate when necessary that English is not your primary language. (Note I'm not perfect either, but I try my best to make sure every word is spelled correctly when posting, I'm not a lazy person like some when I post on a forum) Last edited by kusanagi-sama on Thu Oct 14, 2004 10:59 pm; edited 3 times in total |

I agree with the sentiment, if you're serious. Also, it's grammar, not grammer.

Very good post/reminder for all forum users.
Please take note. English is not my native language, but I do try my best. |

Yes, but your English is better than some of the native speakers on this forum.

I'm just wondering. Can't this board implement a spellchecker?

Yes, I noticed that as well. I think that they are just being lazy when posting.
There is one available for forums, but as far as I know, the owner of this website would have to pay for it. There might be a free one floating out there somewhere, but might not be nearly as good as the paid one. |

No... What would make you think that.
![]() I was just reminding that they need to try to spell a little bit better than they have been. The other thing is that even people who's primary language is english, also seem to have problems with spelling, I notice it quite often at work as well, and mentioned that the Air Force should implement an English class as part of the Tech School curriculum. And English is the first language for most people on the board.

Actually, those with English as their second language post better posts than those who are fluent. |

For non-native English speakers, just identify yourself as such, so we know and understand. What we cannot tolerate are those who can obviously speak/write properly but for reasons of sloppiness and laziness, just plainly refuse or fail to do so.

Not only that, but it's in Teh Rules. The use of proper spelling and grammar is required when posting on these boards. Unless English isn't you're native language, then you're given some leeway, but you still have to tell us in your first couple posts that English isn't your native language.

No, those people are off the hook for the most part as outlined by "Teh Rules". However, that shouldn't be an exculse not to try, IMO. And yes, there are free spell checkers out there for phpBB, I use one (though I didn't setup the board...). Emerje |
