Anyone else here like them? I just got their new album, Seadrum/House of Sun. Am very disappointed that they have Yoshimi singing (she's good - but she's no Eye), and the piano on Seadrum kinda annoys me. Never really cared for it much as an instrument. But House of Sun is really good, it's very droney and fantastic (they even use sitars on it, but it doesn't sound hippie at all). And while it isn't as good as his work on Vision Creation Newsun or with Rovo, it's still very nice to hear Seiichi Yamamoto again. I'm really looking forward to his soundtracks to Mind Game and Kimagure Robot. Any guesses as to what they'll sound like?

What kind of music is it? I've never heard of them.

Well, there's new school Boredoms and old school Boredoms. Lately they've been doing avant-garde jams, and their new albums sounds almost like free jazz in places. But their early stuff is....very difficult to describe, and even harder to explain the appeal. The Pop Tatari album is really just an hour of musical whiplash, and they had one song that pretty much just consisted of Yamatsuka Eye and Toyohito Yoshikawa yelling "ACID" and "POLICE" back and forth at each other for four minutes. Except they're Japanese, so it was more like "ASHAD POLIZU." Yamatsuka Eye is probably the greatest, most crazy-f*cked up singer in the history of anything that could be considered rock and roll by the loosest definition of the word. Well, he might not be quite as crazy vocally as the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, but the time when he demolished a club with a backhoe when he was with Hanatarash probably makes up for that. This is why I was so disappointed that he didn't sing at all on their new album (and why I probably won't buy it when it comes out in America). I dunno if you'd like them, they're definitely an acquired taste. Just get some of their music and listen to it for about a week, which is usually how long it takes people to make up their mind as to whether they like them or not.
Their guitarist has started hanging out with the good people at Studio 4°C and is doing some anime soundtracks, including Mind Game, which I'm so looking forward to more than Steamboy and Howl's Moving Castle combined. So don't lock this thread. And the Flaming Lips wrote a concept album about their drummer. That's just how awesome they are.

Huh, that made little sense but I think I'm interested! I usually like odd or unconventional music (right now I'm listining to some old Industrial bands like Throbbing Gristle, and that can't even be considered music ). I think I'll go with the Eye guy first.[/quote]

I love Throbbing Gristle! Though they're a lot more musical than some of Merzbow's albums (like Pulse Demon), or, God forbid, Masonna. That guy doesn't even vary his noise at all.

I seem to remember the Boredoms playing one year of Lollapalooza back in the early to mid 90s. For this reason, I always thought the band Failure was the "Japanese band that communicated in screams and yells" (as was described in the local paper). Why I got these two confused, I have no idea. Glad to see they're still putting music out, though. Are they touring with eX-girl any time soon?

I haven't heard anything about any tours (with eX-girl or anyone else), but hopefully it's just a matter of time. I've never seen them live.
They sadly don't do much screaming and yelling nowadays. Still a good band, though.

I'm bored just by reading their name "Boredom".

That is indeed a compelling argument.
