Isn't Death And Rebirth just a condesned version of the series? Atleast that is what it looks like when I read the description on the back of the case at my local Block Buster.

Death and Rebirth can be skipped.

But yes, you need to see episodes 1-24 before seeing either it or End of Evangelion. The first 3/4 of D&R recaps episodes 1-24 (but you loose quite a bit of stuff) and the last quarter is the first 30 minutes of End of EVA.

End of Evangelion is intended to replace episodes 25 and 26 of the TV series.

I would say one should watch the TV series before Death&Rebirth - because they do explain SOME things in the movies. And you can skip episode 25&26 and watch End of Evangelion.
But a few people actually like the ending from Shinjis point of view.

As the others have said, you should watch all of the series first - yes, even eps 25 and 26. (A lot of people don't like them, partly because, I think, they don't make much sense at first viewing. I had to watch them through 3-4 times before I finally appreciated them. It is certainly one of the most original and unique endings to an anime series you'll ever finid.)

The Death part of Death/Rebirth is mostly a recap framed by preparations for a string quartet rehearsal involving the Eva pilots, although it does contain a few minutes of scenes that were cut from the regular series (most of which are restored in the Director's Cut). It also includes alternate perspectives on some important scenes. The Rebirth part is the first half of episode 25', which together with episode 26' forms the End of Evangelion movie.

End of Evangelion will not make much sense - or have anywhere near the same impact - if you haven't seen all of the series. It is quite intense and extreme (much moreso than the series in terms of graphic content) and, in its latter stages, very, very tripped-out. People generally either hate it or think it's utterly brilliant; there's no middle ground.

And once you've seen the movies through completely, go back and watch them again with the audio commentary on. They've got the best commentary I've heard on any anime DVDs.

The movies are confusing enough after having watched the series, which in itself, is confusing enough. Why would you want to torture yourself by watching the movies without having seen the series first? Wink

Death and rebirt is worth owning mostly because of the extras, otherwise I wouldn't have paid it any mind so if you are gonna buy it, buy it cheap!

Watching the Eva Movies without watching the series first is like watching Furi Kuri (FLCL) without subtitles, while standing on your head. Its gonna hurt your head and its not gonna make sense at. So take my advice and watch the series once and maybe a second time for good measure before watching the movies. That way they will actually make sense (Hopefully). But hey, making sense of every aspect of Eva is pretty hard anyways. I've watched the entire series over a dozen times (Or was it over two dozen times? I lost count...) and i still learn new things about series that i didn't know before.

I Actually saw End of evangelion way before I watched the tv series. But before I watched ENd of evangelion I had read much about the series and understood the story(to the greatest extent someone can understand EVA). Anyways if you're going to watch it make sure you understand the main points of the story. I recommend watching the series though. It might be hard to find a place that rents the dvds or try to find someone you can borrow the dvds for. Or if you've got some extra cash buy end of evangelion put it on a shelf and buy the platinum(spelled that wrong) edition of the dvds as they come out. Cool
