Orange Range, Ketsumeishi, RIP SLYME, Dragon Ash are hip hop groups that tops the charts.
Johnny's idols and other boy bands are super-popular, too: SMAP, V6, Tokio, Kinki Kids, Arashi, NEWS, Wind-s Hello Projet idols are also super-popular: Morning Musume, Matsuura Aya, Abe Natsumi, Goto Maki, W, etc. Some of the artists that have been popular for years: Southern All Stars (they were popular since before I was born), B'z, GLAY, Mr. Children, L'arc, Fukuyama Masaharu, Hirai Ken, Yuzu, Chemistry, PORNO GRAFFITI, Utada Hikaru, Hamasaki Ayumi, Kuraki Mai, Zard, Dreams Come True, MISIA, Amuro Namie, BOA, ZONE Relative newcomers who have been topping the charts repeatedly: Otsuka Ai, Shibasaki Kou, Moriyama Naotaro, 175R, EXILE, I WISH, BUMP OF CHICKEN, Kishidan, HY, ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION Right now, my favorite is Shibasaki Kou. I think she's up there with Utada and Hamasaki. I love her voice. Her new single, "Katachi Aru Mono" is wonderful! She's also a great actress (she played Mitsuko in Battle Royale movie and female lead in several dramas) ![]() Another singer to keep an eye on is Moriyama Naotaro. Since his smash hit debut single, Sakura ~dokusho~ a couple of years ago, every one of his songs have been a hit. As a matter of fact, he and Utada have a lot in common: both have unique voices that you'd recognize anywhere, and both are second-generation singers who seem to have surpassed their parents' fame. You can check out ORICON homepage for recent ranking (it's in Japanese, though) http://www2.oricon.co.jp/ranking/weekly_single.html |

I haven't watched the anime, but a song from Negima! seems to be popular right now. If you go to the ORICON page, it's number 9 in this week's single ranking.

Um...Of course, I can't know more than someone's who's living in Japan...However, B'z sold over 86 million of records, and probably is from those who everyone there knows. Well, and looks like the ones who're famous out of Japan are those you considered "Some of the artists that have been popular for years". Not a bad guess, thought.
Anyways, I shall congratulate you, I wouldn't be able to do something similar with my country ![]() |

i'd suggest watching popjapan.tv
i know it airs friday at 10 pm and sunday at 11:30 p.m. on the international channel (those times are eastern btw). i think they have a schedule or something at www.i-channel.com they show videos from popular artists in japan, and focus on a featured artist for a month. the show is a bit old, maybe a few months...but it does the job. |

And for anyone living in a country that isn't the US and has crappy or non-existant cable/satellite TV, there's Music Beat on NHK Radio Japan on Fridays (times differ depending on where you are in the world) as part of their English language schedule (see http://www.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/english/). That station is what shortwave radios are designed for!

Megumi Hayashibara is pretty popular and she's also a well known seiyuu.

I think Megumi Hayashibara's popularity is mostly limited to anime fans. Her songs almost never rise to the top 10 spots, so I wouldn't say she's one of the "most popular" artists in Japan. |

Ayumi Hamazaki is sort of the Britney Spears of Japan... And Hikaru Utada's popularity is sort of falling... Right now, I'd say Orange Range and Mika Nakashima.

It is? I thought I heard Exodus is #1 over there, even though it's in English. But then again, it may be #1, but not be selling as much as past albums. I would really like to see her return to Japan and stay over there. Don't get me wrong, I think Exodus is an okay album, but her past work is better. I can go on for hours about her, but I better not. |
