The Encyclopedia is not ready to start listing every light novel that exists in Japan, but I think it makes sense to add the most important ones, the light novels that spawned franchises, like Haruhi Suzumiya.

I want to hear everyone's opinions about putting light novels in the Encyclopedia.

I think its a great idea. Preferably anything that is the original source for an anime or manga series. It would be helpful if we could get information on how many volumes are in a series such as Morebito.

I've always wondered why light novels with anime or manga adaptations aren't in the database, given that things that seem even less anime related (e.g. the U.S. Transformers movies) are in the database. I would definitely be in favor of adding light novels from franchises with an anime or manga adaptation to the database.

This is probably my second sought-after Encyclopedia upgrade. You know what the first is. Wink

With the current system it's kind of weird to have simultaneous manga and anime adaptations of a light novel linked as "related;" they should have separate, independent links to the light novel. Of course, light novels that have anime adaptations have highest priorities.

I agree with this, especially when it's the base of an anime, but then you have the issue of visual novels and video games. Especially with the former seeming to be a big source of new anime series lately.

I have no objection. Would they be classed as "anime", "manga", or as their own category?

Definitely in favour, especially for light novels that spawned both anime and manga, but where they are both based on the original novel rather than on each other (although I guess there will be many cases where determining the exact relationship between the three may be tricky) and novels that have actually been reviewed here.

There are also spinoff novels for some anime, for example the one that bridges the Gatekeepers TV series and OVA - I was surprised to find we already have an entry for this one:

I get a number of hits in the Encyclopedia for the word "novel".

Here's a better filtered search:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=site:animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia+intitle:novel+-inurl:releases.php+-inurl:page+-inurl:approve+-intitle:manga

[edit: improved filter - looks like we have around 14]
[edit2: 15 including the Blood novel, which was listed under manga)]
[edit3: removed weird duplication in URL]

I agree with this also, more stuff is better. But like Dessa said, any plany to include the video games that spawned an anime/manga series?

If so, visual novels should have much higher priority than "mainstream" games. The latter are covered by many other sources and, while having larger fan base and generally liked by many anime/manga fans, the composition and atmosphere of their respective fandoms are completely different (for example, compare Clannad / ToHeart / School Days with Pokemon / Yu-Gi-Oh! / Monster Hunter). Again, titles with anime adaptations should be listed first.

Yeah, I was thinking only instances where the game came first, and the anime is based on the game. Like the first Valkyria Chronicles game (which is awesome, btw) where the anime is based on the game, and follows the same basic story. Not so much things like Dirge of Cerberus, which is like a spin off game in the same universe as FF7, which (I think) is in the same universe as Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Then there are merchandising games, like Pokemon... Maybe this is too messy to deal with for the benefit it'd provide.

Yes please, and I'd be more than happy to contribute what little information I can to help out. Given light novels have far less information around them than anime (much like manga) it won't be overly difficult to add them in over time.

I'm happy to help test out stuff before it goes live/in early phases if it helps too.

Ok, so at first I was thinking of a more customized approach for light novels but let's start simply, with the tools we have, meaning the "quarantine" option just as for live-action, manwha, etc. After several light novels have been added we'll see what, if anything, needs to be tweaked.

For Encyclopedia editors: add light novels as "manga" and then set the quarantine flag to "light novel!"

I've added Haruhi Suzumiya; please post which light novels should be included in the Encyclopedia, along with their relationship to existing Encyclopedia titles. At the moment I only want to include "major" light novels, so they need to have at least one anime adaptation.

I can get links later with more information, but for now, here's a pretty good list to start with:

Baccano!
Bakemonogatari
Chrome Shelled Regios
Durarara!!
Fate/zero (prequel to Fate/stay night)
Ghost Hunt
Kara no Kyoukai
Kaze no Stigma
Kino no Tabi
Maria-sama ga Miteiru
OreImo
Read or Die
Slayers
Strike Witches
To Aru Majutsu no Index
Toradora!
Zero no Tsukaima
Shakugan no Shana
Spice and Wolf
Scrapped Princess
Fullmetal Alchemist
Full Metal Panic
Harukanaru Toki no Naka de
.hack

Aaa, I think I'll just link this instead...

Of these, I do own what was released in English of Scrapped Princess, at least some of the .hack (there's at least 2 series), and my roommate has Slayers, to get info out of.
