I've noticed that there are quite a few amazing Anime that are rated quite low, but for which some consider to be some of the best. There's the likes of...

Samurai X - Rurouni Kenshin (Best of all time Anime hyper)

Golden Boy (Funniest of all time (18+))

GunGrave

Neon Genesis Evangelion

and most of the Mobile Suit Gundams

These are just a few off the top of my head, but of course this is just my opinion. Tell me if YOU think there's any great Anime being underrated...

EDIT: I guess what I mean is under-ranked Anime here on ANN. I tend to use ANN as a reference for most Anime I watch, since no one here knows half a thing about Anime, sometimes I find myself randomly picking some because the rankings can be abit unfair...

NGE is not underrated. Many people will argue that its in fact OVERrated. its a polarizing series, with equally zealous fanboys and haters.

I thought the ratings were good for those shows. Generally, ratings are too good for anything and aren't very reliable. Be it as it may, I've always thought Speed Grapher to be an underrated show.

To me it's Kiba. I thought the story was pretty great and the characters were at least relatively interesting, though ANN claimed the series to be generic as a whole. I wish they had reviewed the second half. It;s definently darker than the first.

Marchen Awakens Romance is another one. ANN said that by the time you pick up the series, your better off buying part of Bleach. BLASPHEMY! At least MAR gave a crap about it;s characters and ended when it needed to unlike Bleach which is pretty much still going just because Kubo refuses to let it die.

@battausai47:

If you go here, then you will find a link for underrated anime. As abunai has said elsewhere, the statistics are really quite robust; you just have to be willing to read through all of the numbers.

Huh. That's rather interesting, as I find myself taking shows down a notch because I'm not certain that others will enjoy what I enjoy! Wink

Don't forget the anime's producers and director; they, too share a part of the responsibility.

I remember seeing The Tale of Genji (1987) a few years ago and I very much enjoyed it. It wasn't perfect, but some parts of it are haunting, especially the ending.

I've always wondered why it doesn't seem to get more attention, though. On the one hand, it's based on an extremely old piece of Japanese literature and would probably catch the eye of people interested in Japanese history and culture. Also, it's a very deliberate, quiet drama/romance, and a contemplative character study of a complicated figure.

Rurouni kenshin and Neon ranks as one of the most popular and best rated on this website so i don't see how they are underrated or under-ranked as you want to put it. If anything is not praised and should be it's Ghost hunt. It's a supernatural type that deals with mysteries that involves ghosts and demons. Yea i know a bit cliche, but there aren't many that are so well-executed as it is. I would be ready to beg for a second season.

As I said before, this is only my opinion. If you think the Anime is already rated high then I guess it means I think it should be rated higher...

NGE is ranked 145 out of 3577 anime in the encyclopedia. Rurouni Kenshin is 130. That's 95th and 96th percentile; you can't get much less underrated than that without being overrated.

I took a quick scroll through my anime list, and I didn't see anything jump out at me as criminally underrated. Most of the shows I rated very highly were either fairly respected or I recognize my tastes are outside the norm. If pressed, I'd say Moyashimon or Kaiba, but those aren't underrated so much as under appreciated (and Kaiba's second half isn't quite as good as it's first half). I think more people should see them, but those who already have generally have a pretty positive opinion of those shows.

Hatsukoi Limited - Porobably mostly comes off as standard romantic anime with some ecchi themes, the great thing about it was the main character swapping between the characters and an extensive relationship web. And some of the parts were quite memorable.

Sasameki Koto - Maybe it was because it is a yuri show that most blew it off as just being girls snogging each other and pandering of the audience. But it actually is quite good, it didn't really use fanservice very often and it was both sweet and funny.

Kure-nai - I have high praise for this one, I guess it initially looks unimpressive, but it is great. The characters have weight to them, and it can be a joy to watch the fish out of water Murasaki experience the world. Not that there is not any drama as there are shocking reveals, and quite an ending.

I agree. I have never understood why it is so belittled by so many fans. Many people speak of how off-model the characters are and how bad the animation is, but when I watched it I didn't notice any of that (just how I never noticed the "screen jitter" from Neon Genesis Evangelion). Maybe I'm blind. Or maybe people should stop worrying about things that don't really matter.

While the whole throwing of X-rated stuff into the show to make it more "mature" fell flat, the overall story was decent, as were the characters. It ain't a brilliant or amazing show, but it certainly doesn't deserve to be so ostracised.

You're new, so I'm going to let this thread off with a warning:

In other words, we don't like to see one-liners. You can one-line all around the Internet, but we actually try to promote discussion. You don't have to be terribly detailed with paragraphs or anything, but a couple of well-thought out and honest sentences would be nice.

If you like something or want to make a statement about whatever, put a reason. It not only helps us understand your mentality or praise for that thing, but it can sometimes even lead to continued discussion or new thoughts.

Good luck with that.

I've got a good one! It may not be under rated but definitely under radar. Sola. Bandai Ent gave it a pretty quiet release here in the states. I think it was one of those titles they acquired when BVUSA went bye bye. No masterpiece but definitely one of the better supernatural shows of the past couple years (I think it was best show of 07 in Japan...) A very intriguing show that deserves a watch. Well thought out writing and the best part is you won't break the bank buying it. The downside is that its English subtitled only...Sad

Durarara!! shouldn't be ranked 367. This is made worse by Clannad After Story sitting at number one. My tastes have never really coincided with that of the general anime fandom, but really?

Wouldn't you think most people would see that as a good thing?
