I LOVE spindle packaging. It's so convenient, having all the discs in one case. I don't have to open all those little cases at a time to load up my 5 disc DVD player. The outer plastic of spindle packaging is thick and durable; I've found that discs in thinpacks tend to get scratched because the thinpack plastic is so thin and pliable that even slight pressure can cause the plastic to come into contact with the underside of a disc. It's not unusual for me to buy a brand new thinpack series and find the discs already scratched up, but that's never happened to me with a series housed in spindle packaging (knock on wood). Thinpacks tend to not stay fully closed after several openings (I guess this is only a big deal for people who like to rewatch their shows a lot, like me), and the outer cardboard which houses the thinpacks is... well... cardboard. Not the most durable of materials.

I'm asking because I've recently seen some reviews of products where people rated something down because of spindle packaging. Mostly, these people say things like "the discs are just floating around inside the case, so I'm afraid they'll be prone to getting scratched." To me, it seems like these people don't really have a grasp on things. The discs aren't 'floating around,' they're secure when the case is closed. With upwards of five discs, the discs do come into contact with each other, but the only contact is with the top sides of the discs, which are extremely durable.

The only time I don't like spindles is when there are more than six discs, and they start stacking two discs on top of each other.

So, what do you guys prefer?

I only have one spindle package, and that's Elfen Lied. Hopefully it's the only one I ever own. The discs in my set did scratch. Disc 3 in particular was scratched a lot. And it's such a pain in the ass if you want the disc on the bottom, especially if you have a set with a lot of discs (Moribito). I do like the sturdy box, but I would prefer it if they used litebox or anime legends style packaging instead of craptastic stackpacks.

box sets where the disks are NOT stacked on top of each other.
I like to own the whole of something. So buying single disks is out.

I own Princess Resurrection and the dvd's are all stacked on top of each other! this is not the way to collect in my mind long term!

yes I'm a collector.

I do own Lucky Star, Ghost Stories, NHK and Hell Girl in the spindle cases (when it comes to mind for my collection) and they don't scratch my discs whatsoever. And I do like the spindles better because i'm pretty sure it saves me more space on my shelf.

I own one spindle set and its kaze no stigma part 1 and its a pain i have to remove one disk to get to the disk on the bottom. I miss the old volumes and starter sets with boxes that made me feel my collection was safer.

Personally I prefer any packaging that is NOT a stackpack. I have one - the FMP Heavy Metal Collection - and honestly if it wasn't for the fact that I got it for half-off before I knew it was a stackpack, I probably would've skipped it. I'm still debating about trading it in for credit at some point and picking up Funi's sets. Or giving it to my brother. One of the two.

I have yet to get a spindle pack delivered that din't have at least one DVD rattling loose in the package. So far, I have been lucky and have had no damage. I'm trying to avoid them from now on though.

Heck no! I hate having all EIGHT of my Moribito DVDs on one spindle. Yes I'm going to fix that pretty soon and yes this was the cheap Walmart edition but still (I was also annoyed by the low episode counts on the discs, they could've easily cut one or two out). What I like better is something like my Princess Tutu pack (the older one with the ugly cover) where everything is in the same case but each DVD is on it's own page and you flip through the pages to find the one you want, much more efficient.

I agree completely. I was very disappointed when I opened that case and saw all 8 disks on a single stack like the Call of Duty 2 for PC. I'm definitely going to swap out that case for something much more convenient.

The sets I like the most would have to be the bricks where each disk had its own sleeve, like the all too short-lived Geneon bricks. I heart my Vandread and Tenchi Universe bricks as they give me no problems or hassles at all. Hell, even the Black Lagoon tin cases where disks over-lap one another are preferred over spindles. I've developed a technique in getting Black Lagoon's 3rd disk out and back in without having to remove the 2nd first with no harm done to either disk. But... there's no technique one can develop to make handling those spindles easier, none.

Nope no more stackpacks for me thanks.

I got all thin-packs, liteboxes, and loads of single DVD releases.

I agree that smaller packages do save shelf space, but you also do stand a good chance of scratching the discs.

I hate spindle packs. I can't even see it being a large price difference between that and the multi sleeve approach. And they aren't as space consious as thinpak sets are, which is my ideal packing for DVDs.

My ideal packaging is thickpacks (the Legends style packs for example), I only have to open the case one time to switch DVDs out, not open two DVD cases, so that I like. And everything gets its own space.

But spindles? Ugh, I think it's a pain to get the DVDs off of the thing in the first place and I feel like you have to take them all out to get any given disc. For long term storage I'd probably let it slide but for actively watching it, it sucks. Shame too because I just ordered Glass Mask which I know is a spindle pack. However I should still have that blank 6 disc thickpack that I could transfer it to (I hope). Oh but on the plus side if I get a spindle pack, like the series but then decide to sell something else with the same disc count that in a normal thickpack, I could just switch the packaging, get rid of the damn spindle pack and feel mildly sorry for whoever buys it used, hehehe!

Spindles, as in stackpacks? They should burn for all eternity in the bowels of the Underworld.

I usually prefer thinpacks over keepcases anyways.

More artwork = WIN

If cost were no consideration, my favourite would be big fat individual volumes, taking up major space on the shelf and keeping their contents safe. But since cost is always a major consideration for me, I generally don't complain about thinpacks, multiple discs on a spindle, or whatever else can be used to pack much content into a single package. "Spindle packs", though not my favourite thing, are not something I worry about too much.
What I really DON'T like, though, are those big brittle plastic packs with multiple hinges and flanges and so on. (My Planetes is one of these.) It always seems that one of the hinged DVD-holding flaps is coming loose, or I can't close one of the multiple openings properly, or some bit of plastic that clicks something shut is breaking off. Those big coffin-packs are fiddly, have too many moving parts, and seem to require an accuracy in performance that the plastic they're made of just isn't up to.
