March 10, 2005 – Toronto –The Canadian Entertainment Network is thrilled to announce international recording artist and accomplished film and television actress Minnie Driver will make her Canadian singing debut at The Canadian Entertainment Network Awards (CENA) on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at The Carlu (444 Yonge St. in College Park).
Driver is currently promoting her debut CD Everything I've Got in My Pocket (Rounder/Universal) and is primarily known to audiences around the world as an actress in such critically acclaimed feature films as Good Will Hunting, Circle of Friends, Grosse Pointe Blank and recently, Phantom Of The Opera. Driver, an accomplished singer-songwriter, has been singing since she was a teenager and was signed to a development deal with Island Records prior to her film career success.
The Canadian Entertainment Network Awards is the only one of its kind to celebrate the best in the Canadian Home Entertainment industry and in particular DVDs, which have grown exponentially over the last five years. CENA is dedicated to acknowledging the success of DVD sales and rentals, which in 2004 accounted for over $25 billion in consumer spending. This year's event is already sold-out and promises to solidify CENA as one of Canada's premiere entertainment award shows.
SECOND ANNUAL CEN AWARDS A SELLOUT
The second annual Canadian Entertainment Network Awards will adorn the elegant Carlu Grand Ballroom in Toronto April 26, 2005. The event was a huge success in its inaugural year and, tickets having sold out quickly, promises to be even bigger and better this year. The black-tie affair, which features a pre-awards cocktail party, a three-course dinner, the gala awards ceremony, and an exciting after-party, will see awards bestowed in over thirty categories. Honours will go to DVD titles, retailers, a readers' choice and more, and this year's edition sees the addition of awards for the Best Canadian Music DVD, Best Sports Action DVD and the VideoScan Award for the country's highest-selling DVD. Guests at the glamorous, entertaining, and fast-paced event will receive special awards souvenir programs and gift bags from event sponsors. It will certainly be a night to remember.
JESSICA HOLMES TO HOST SECOND ANNUAL CEN AWARDS
Jessica Holmes returns to the podium this year to host the second annual CEN Awards after charming the attendees at the inaugural event. The Ottawa native has ascended to Canadian comedy prominence over the past few years, first as the star of The Holmes Show on CTV, and now as a full-fledged member of CBC mainstay The Royal Canadian Air Farce. The Gemini and Canadian Comedy Award-nominated comic Got her start on the stand-up circuit, and was quickly recognized for her razor-sharp wit and spot-on impressions. She appeared a number of times at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal and was a competitor at the World Improv Championships. She later joined the Second City troupe in Toronto before starting out on television in a number of series and comedy specials. Her Gemini award-winning CTV special, Holmes Alone, spawned the creation of her own sketch comedy series, The Holmes Show. After guest starring on a number of episodes of Air Farce, she was invited to join the cast on a permanent basis, and she continues to garner accolades for her work with the long-running show.
CEN AWARDS 2005 NOMINEES ANNOUNCED
The nominees for the second annual Canadian Entertainment Network Awards, which honour the best in the Canadian home entertainment industry, have been announced.
As was the case last year, films in The Lord of the Rings franchise led all nominees. The theatrical cut and extended versions of The Return of the King and the special extended version of The Two Towers combined to collect ten nominations. The special edition of Gone With The Wind earned five nominations. Finding nemo and Shrek 2 garnered four nominations. The Matrix: Ultimate Collection, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Star Wars Trilogy each received three nods. Alien: Quadrilogy, the Ultimate Edition of Dawn Of The Dead, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Hero, Live Aid, Seinfeld: Seasons 1 & 2 and the Special Edition of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly rounded out the multiple nominees with two apiece.
Five first time studio nominees also make the list this year. Morningstar Entertainment (The Greatest Canadian), Microfilms (Project Grizzly), ADV Films (Lady Death and Evangelion: Platinum One), SMA Distribution (Stott Pilates: Body and Soul), and ThinkFilm (The Hebrew Hammer) all see themselves in contention for the first time at this year's CEN Awards.
