Indian Govt. Launches WAVES Anime & Manga Contest

Competition takes place in Bangalore, Chennai, Kohima, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Varanasi, Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Hyderabad

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India and Media and Entertainment Association of India (MEAI) have launched the WAVES Anime & Manga Contest (WAM!). The competition is aimed at "harnessing the growing interest in manga and anime in India and a constituent of World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit (WAVES)" while offering "a platform for Indian talent to create localized versions of popular Japanese styles, appealing to both local and global audiences."

The competition will take place across several Indian towns and cities on the following dates:

  • WAM! Bangalore: October 27, 2024
  • WAM! Chennai: November 10, 2024
  • WAM! Kohima: November 22, 2024
  • WAM! Kolkata: November 24, 2024
  • WAM! Bhubaneswar: November 26, 2024
  • WAM! Varanasi: November 28, 2024
  • WAM! Delhi: November 30, 2024
  • WAM! Mumbai: December 15, 2024
  • WAM! Ahmedabad: December 17, 2024
  • WAM! Nagpur: December 19, 2024
  • WAM! Hyderabad: December 21, 2024

Registrations for the competition are open. It will take place from 9:00 a.m. IST to 6:00 p.m. IST.

The competition has three verticals: manga, webtoon, and anime. It will have four participation categories Individual (Student), Teams (Student), Individual (Professional), and Teams (Professional).

The finale will take place from February 2 through February 5 in Bharat Mandapam, Delhi.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will award the winners an all-expenses-paid trip to AnimeJapan and similar international events.
