Square Enix announced on Monday that it will release a global version of its Dragon Quest of the Stars (Hoshi no Dragon Quest) smartphone role-playing game in early 2020. The company began streaming a live-action promotional video for the announcement.
A closed beta test for Android devices will run from October 30 to November 28. Registration is available on the game's official website. The beta test will allow players to experience the main story, customize characters, obtain equipment, and play events and multiplayer mode.
The game has the largest world in the series' history, and its focus is on exploring the world and fighting monsters. The franchise's character designer Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball, Dr. Slump manga) designs characters for the game. Kanahei illustrates emotive stamps that players can use to communicate with each other.
The game launched for iOS and Android devices in Japan in October 2015, and it has since been downloaded more than 20 million times.
Square Enix released the first three Dragon Quest games — Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line, and Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation — for the Nintendo Switch in North America and Europe on Friday. The games launched in Japan on the same day, and the Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition Switch game also launched simultaneously.
