Japanese gaming news website Famitsu revealed on Thursday that Koei Tecmo Games will launch the new Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate (Musou Orochi 3 Ultimate) game for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in Japan in December and for PC via Steam in February 2020. The game is an expanded version of Koei Tecmo's Warriors Orochi 4 (Musou Orochi 3) game.
Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate is set in a different dimension created by the god of Olympus, Zeus. The game has more than 170 characters, a new story about a battle that centers on the new character Gaia, and side scenarios that complete stories that the original game did not tell. A new "Infinite Mode" lets players fight strong enemies, and the game will also feature new challenge modes "Godspeed" and "Destruction." New sacred treasures will appear, and players can switch characters' fixed sacred treasures. "Musou Switch Combo" is a new cooperative technique that connects allies' Musou Attacks.
Gaia is a new character who wields a hecatoncheires. In the beginning, she lost her body in order to create much of the earth. She is a wise goddess with a lively personality, and she pulls everyone to save the world. Gaia has the power to embody the memories carved into the earth.
Joan of Arc (voiced by Yumi Touma) is a returning collaboration character who wields a spear. She is a patriotic savior of the French Kingdom of Orleans. Worried that her country might be destroyed in the Hundred Years' War, she is determined to protect the people of France. She is a gentle girl with a strong sense of justice.
Koei Tecmo streamed a teaser video on Sunday prior to the game announcement:
The original Warriors Orochi 4 game launched for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC in North America and Europe in October 2018. In Japan, the game launched for PS4 and Switch in September 2018, and for PC in October 2018.
The game has 170 playable characters, which is not only a new record for the game series, but also a world record for most playable characters in a hack-and-slash video game. In addition to new characters, the game features a new "thaumaturgy action" attack method.
Omega Force returned to produce the title, the first new game in the franchise in five years. The first Warriors Orochi (Musou Orochi) game featured characters from the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors franchises when it shipped in 2007 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360.
Warriors Orochi 3 (Musou Orochi 2 due to a renumbering change in the West) debuted in 2011 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and the Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate update shipped for PS3 and PS Vita in Japan in September 2013. A PS4 version launched in June 2014, and a Switch version launched in November 2017. In the West, the game launched in September 2014 on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and PS Vita. Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate added characters from the Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, Soul Calibur, and Atelier series, among others, for a total of more than 142 playable characters.
