French/Japanese Animated Film Mutafukaz Teaser Trailer Debuts
posted on by Karen Ressler
French videogame and comics publisher Ankama began streaming a teaser trailer for Mutafukaz, the upcoming animated film based on Guillaume "Run" Renard's comic series of the same name. Japan's Studio 4°C (Tekkon Kinkreet, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc) is co-producing the project.
Renard himself is directing the film with Tekkon Kinkreet animation director Shoujirou Nishimi. Shinji Kimura (Tekkon Kinkreet, Steamboy) is serving as art director.
Renard's original comic series is set in "Dark Meat City" — a "pre-apocalyptic American urban jungle" — and revolves around Angelino, a young man whose scooter accident results in the acquisition of supernatural powers. Ankama's official website for the comic stated that it is inspired by science fiction of the 1950s, hip hop music, and wrestling.
The project was first announced in 2011, and is now slated for 2017.
Studio 4°C has worked on a variety of international collaborations, including the remake of the American animated series Thundercats and several projects with Warner Bros. franchises: The Animatrix, Batman: Gotham Knight, and Halo Legends.
Update: Titan Comics has acquired the rights to the original French comic and will publish the series in English-speaking countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. The first issue is due out in this fall. Thanks to Ronin0079 for the news tip.
