Amiibo will also support NES/SNES game samples
Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced in his 3rd quarter financial presentation on Tuesday that the company will be developing amiibo in the form of collectible cards this year.
In addition, the company plans to release free-to-download NES and SNES games for Wii U that will be unlockable with amiibo. In this system, the player will tap the amiibo and play through a scene in a particular game. The entire game will not be playable because of a time limit, but the player will be able to tap the amiibo again to play through more scenes.
Iwata also announced that the amiibo figures have sold more than 5.7 million units worldwide since Nintendo released the first wave in November.
